action

The film follows the life of the artist Antonio Ligabue (1899–1965). The son of an Italian woman who emigrated to Switzerland is adopted by a married couple in German-speaking Switzerland . There is a love-hate relationship between the foster parents and the young Ligabue, and he is not receiving adequate care. When he attacks his foster mother, he is expelled from Switzerland and taken to Italy against his will. Ligabue ended up in the Po Valley , where he lived for years in abject poverty, loneliness and without a permanent residence on the river bank . In order to get his fears under control, he begins to seek refuge in drawing and also hires out as a casual worker. Ligabue met the sculptor and painter Renato Marino Mazzacurati (1907–1969), who discovered his talent. This introduces him to the world of art and teaches him appropriate painting techniques. Ligabue soon became known for his works, in which he integrated tigers , gorillas , lions and jaguars into the poplar groves of the Po floodplains . Throughout his life, however, he also suffered from mental illness, fits of anger and, due to gout and rickets , from physical pain. Ligabue is admitted to psychiatry several times.

background

The shooting of the fifth feature film by Giorgio Diritti was scheduled for May 2018 and took place on original locations in the Emilia-Romagna region , including the municipality of Gualtieri , until the end of 2018 . The film was produced by the Palomar and RAI Cinema companies.

Volevo nascondermi is the second film adaptation of Ligabue's life. In 1977, the three-part award-winning television film Ligabue by Salvatore Nocita with Flavio Bucci in the title role, which was also produced by Rai. Nocita's directorial work was successfully broadcast on Italian television, making the artist known to a wide audience. Leading actor Elio Germano avoided watching the television production with the actor Bucci, who was known to him, in preparation for the shooting, in order not to be influenced by her in any way. When he spoke to locals on site to get information about the real Ligabue, they unknowingly quoted scenes from the television film, as Diritti later gave Germano to understand.

A first trailer for the film was released on January 27, 2020.

criticism

“Diretti's film images are large and calm, sometimes they look like still images, often of captivating symmetry and beauty. They show a world that one could lean on: only Antonio not. "

“Giorgio Diritti's film“ Volevo nascondermi ”tells of a battered creature that has to paint in order to survive. A modern passion story. "
