Favorite films

The nominations were announced by the European Film Academy (EFA) on November 8th, 2008 at the European Film Festival in Seville . Films with political and socially critical topics dominated the selection. The Italian film productions Gomorrah - Journey to the Empire of the Camorra by Matteo Garrone prevailed as the favorite at the award ceremony . The film adaptation of Roberto Saviano 's bestseller of the same name, which is dedicated to the Neapolitan crime syndicate Camorra , was able to convert all five nominations into victories. Gomorrah dethroned Michael Haneke's 2005 four-time award-winning film Caché , which had previously been considered the most awarded film. Among the winners were director Garrone, leading actor Toni Servillo , the script and the camera work. Garrones Film, also Italy's candidate for the upcoming Academy Awards in the category Best Foreign Language Film , prevailed against his compatriot Paolo Sorrentino , who filmed the life of seven-time Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti (also played by Toni Servillo) with the political satire Il Divo connections to the Mafia are also said to have been made. The two Italian film productions led the field of favorites with five nominations each.

Also nominated for best European film were Juan Antonio Bayona's horror film The Orphanage , Mike Leigh's comedy Happy-Go-Lucky and Laurent Cantet's golden palm winner Die Klasse (France's candidate for an Oscar abroad), which went unprivileged. Ari Folman's animated documentary film Waltz with Bashir, which was also considered in the category, won the award for the best film music. This went to the German film composer Max Richter, who lives in Great Britain .

Besides judges, German filmmakers were only represented in secondary categories. Andreas Dresen received a nomination for best director for his love drama Cloud Neun , but was left behind compared to Matteo Garrone. The German-Irishman Michael Fassbender ( Hunger ), Jürgen Vogel ( Die Welle ) and the German Film Prize winner Elmar Wepper ( Cherry Blossoms - Hanami ) competed together with the British James McAvoy ( apology ) and the Danes Thure Lindhardt and Mads Mikkelsen ( Tage des Zorns ) for the Acting Award, which went to Toni Servillo for his roles in Gomorrah and Il Divo . In the Best Actress category , Ursula Werner ( Cloud Nine ) had to give way to the British Kristin Scott Thomas ( So many years I love you ), who also beat Hiam Abbass ( Lemon Tree ), the Albanian Arta Dobroshi ( Lorna's Silence ) the British Sally Hawkins ( Happy-Go-Lucky ) and the Spaniard Belén Rueda ( The Orphanage ) prevailed. The Austrian contribution Revanche by Götz Spielmann , Austria’s contribution to the upcoming Oscars, and the two Swiss contributions Home by Ursula Meier and Gioni e Nuvole by Silvio Soldini were not even considered.

The 1,800 members of the European Film Academy voted on the winners of the individual categories before the award ceremony. The winner was the actress Judi Dench and the filmmakers Lars von Trier , Thomas Vinterberg , Kristian Levring and Søren Kragh-Jacobsen . The Oscar -Preisträgerin and Golden Globe -Gewinnerin Judi Dench received the award for lifetime achievement . The British woman was nominated for the Audience Award twice in 2001 and 2005 for Iris and The Scent of Lavender . The Danes Lars von Trier, Thomas Vinterberg, Kristian Levring and Søren Kragh-Jacobsen made a name for themselves in 1995 as the founders of the Dogma movement and received the award in the category Best European Performance in World Cinema . In the past, both had been responsible for the production of Lars von Trier's award-winning films Dogville and Manderlay , among other things .
