Tadanobu Asano ( Japanese 浅 野 忠信 , Asano Tadanobu ; born November 27, 1973 in Yokohama , Japan ), actually Tadanobu Satō ( 佐藤 忠信 , Satō Tadanobu ), is a Japanese film actor . He mostly plays dark, often mentally ill characters.

Life

Acting career

Half of his mother is Indian and his father works as an acting agent . At the age of fourteen he formed a band; his classmates admired him for his western appearance. The 1.79-meter-tall actor had his first acting role at the age of sixteen in the television series San-nen B-gumi Kinpachi sensei 3 . The first role in a feature film came in 1990 with Bataashi kingyo , but critics saw him most of all in the 1993 television film Fried Dragon Fish , directed by Shunji Iwai . In 1995 he had a role in Hirokazu Koreeda's award-winning Maboroshi - The Light of Illusion as a family man who committed suicide at the Venice Film Festival .

In 1996 he was in front of the camera for the eight-minute advertising film wkw / tk / 1996 @ 7'55 ″ hk.net for the Japanese fashion designer Takeo Kikuchi . The film, directed by Wong Kar-Wai , is about a Japanese man and a Chinese woman (played by Karen Mok ) who shoot each other. In 1997 he won the Japanese Academy Award for Most Popular Actor for the films Picnic , Focus , Fried Dragon Fish and Acri .

For this role, Asano received an award at the Venice Film Festival. In the thriller drama Invisible Waves (2006) shown in the competition at the Berlinale , the actor worked again with Pen-Ek Ratanaruang.

Other activities and private life

Together with the director Sōgo Ishii he founded the band Mach 1.67 , in which he acts as a singer. Asano is also involved as a model for Jun Takahashi and Takeo Kikuchi and as an artist. His two illustrated books error and BUNCH were published in Japan in 1999 and 2003, respectively.

While shooting Shunji Iwai's Picnic , which premiered in 1996, he met the singer Chara . The two have been married since 1995 and have two children.
