action

Tokyo in a bleak vision of the future. The two stupid work colleagues Mitsao (Japanese Mitsuo ) and Fujio, who spend their entire lives together, lead a simple life and work together in a fire extinguisher workshop . What unites the friends above all is a great passion for the martial art of unarmed self-defense: Jiu Jitsu . Hypochondriac Mitsao, an older man with a striking bald head, gives lessons to his gaunt companion with an idiosyncratic Afro hairstyle .

One day during the lunch break a practice session is suddenly interrupted by her angry supervisor. In a subsequent scuffle, their boss is accidentally killed. The two quickly dispose of the corpse on the colossal, towering garbage dump “Black Fuji” in Tokyo's Edogawa district . This illegal garbage dump , which is used by all residents of the metropolis to dispose of waste, is the scene of the action after the main character leaves. Those buried here rise from their stinking resting place enriched with industrial waste, mutate into zombies and initially stroll around as human flesh- hungry monsters. The bloodthirsty undead murder other people who, after their death, also turn into "biting demons" in order to hunt down the living. This "epidemic" spreads rapidly until it comes to explosive raids in the Tokyo area.

Although Mitsao and Fujio are right in the middle of the action, constantly threatened and harassed by revenants, they initially don't notice anything of an invasion by the zombies. When they realize their mistake, their simple life ends abruptly and the martial artists flee north in their brightly colored minibus. Their destination is Russia , where they want to learn new fighting techniques in the home of the "strongest and best wrestlers in the world". On her way, however, Mitsao is bitten by a zombie on a rescue mission for the attractive Yoko; the former companions lose sight of each other - a painful separation ensues.

Five years after the zombie invasion, Tokyo is almost depopulated. The rich and powerful survivors live in sheltered, fortress-like housing complexes, while the poor are enslaved and drawn to work. People unable to work are eliminated in cold blood. Against this background, the elitist upper class of the “stressed rich” demands entertainment measures. Therefore one recruits fightable gladiators from the slaves for a deadly duel against the biting undead. One of the stars of the gladiator scene is Fujio, who uses his Jiu-Jitsu training experience to take out his opponents with his bare hands. He has dedicated himself to the traditional teaching method of his master Mitsao, whom he pays homage to almost every day in a small shrine. The simple-minded man lives with his wife Yoko and their daughter Fumiyo in poor conditions, always worried about being able to provide for the needy for his small family.

One day Fujio faces his fatherly friend and mentor, Mitsao, who is touted as a “bald zombie”, in a gladiatorial match in the arena. Mitsao asks his long-time companion to kill him, but he refuses. In order to emphasize his demand, the former Jiu-Jitsu master humiliates and provokes his student until the latter knocks him out in a rage. Just at this moment, the safe refuge of the rich is stormed by an ideologically motivated rebel group, which is permanently damaging the fortifications of the high-security area. The residential complex is overrun by aggressive zombies as the story progresses. The once safe haven no longer exists. A short flashback shows that Mitsao was not transformed after all, because the corresponding zombie had wrong teeth. At the end of the film, Fujio travels with his small family to Russia in order to become a gifted fighter there; pursued by Mitsao.

Reviews

"Horror comedy based on a popular manga as questionable entertainment for a relevant audience."
