Ichi the Killer ( Japanese 殺 し 屋 1 , Koroshiya 1 ) is a controversial film adaptation of the manga of the same name by Hideo Yamamoto from 2001, which was directed by Takashi Miike .

action

The film is about a mentally unstable and introverted young man named Ichi, who is abused as a bloodthirsty killer by a mysterious person named "Jijii"; Jijii makes use of manipulation by suggesting to Ichi that his victims are people who humiliated him in his childhood. On the other hand, there is the sadomasochistic Yakuza Kakihara, who chases him after Ichi kills his boss Anjo at the beginning of the film.

However, the yakuza is also intrigued by Ichi's seemingly cold-hearted way of killing people, and searches him for an unprecedented peak of his masochistic tendencies. When Kakihara meets Ichi, however, he realizes that Ichi does not meet his expectations.

In the end, Kakihara dies and Jijii is hanged from a tree. Ichi's fate remains uncertain.

reception

The film gained worldwide fame and a large fan base, primarily because of its explicit portrayal of violence. He deals with the subject of sadomasochism and mixes it with the yakuza film genre .

Frames

An abridged version was released in many of the countries in which the film is distributed. The cuts vary between 3 and 17 minutes. An uncut version has been released on DVD in Japan, which is approx. 129 minutes long (according to the NTSC standard). This running time corresponds to about 123 minutes of the PAL speed. Unabridged releases of Ichi the Killer are also available in the USA and several EU countries .

In mid-June 2005, the film was released in Germany on DVD with a running length of approx. 110 minutes ( age rating : FSK not approved for young people ), which has been shortened by 13 minutes.

In mid-December 2006, Raptor Film Entertainment released an uncut version of the film, which the BPjM classified as relevant under criminal law. On May 30, 2008, a nationwide order to confiscate the Raptor version was finally issued for a violation of Section 131 of the German Criminal Code .

criticism

“It's no longer about heroic exploits. His Ichi is almost a caricature of an avenger. […] ICHI THE KILLER is one of the most controversial films by Takashi Miike, who already knew how to shock with works like AUDITION or VISITOR Q. In contrast to his Japanese director colleague Takeshi Kitano, people here are not simply shot and then dead, but are literally tortured, dismembered and disposed of. These excesses of violence are, however, again so exaggerated, absurd and unrealistic in their brutality that the audience no longer identifies with the main characters. "

Thematically related films

In 2002, an anime called Koroshiya-1 Episode 0 was released , which tells the detailed story of Ichi's childhood. In 2003 a prequel to Ichi the Killer titled 1-Ichi , which deals with Ichi's youth, was released.

Manga

The basis for the film has the same name Manga Japanese illustrator Hideo Yamamoto , whose 101 Chapter comprehensive work in the magazine Young Sunday of Shogakukan published -Verlages.

The content of the manga differs in terms of content from its cinematic translation - for example, the twin brothers called by Kakihara have a much more important role in the manga. Also here many characters have a completely different appearance than in the film adaptation: Kakihara has deep black hair and numerous piercings on her face, while Jijii looks smaller and older than his film counterpart. I would like to point out the different endings of manga and film.
