Audition ( Japanese オ ー デ ィ シ ョ ン , Ōdishon ) is a horror film by the Japanese director Takashi Miike from 1999 , which is based on the novel by Ryū Murakami .

action

The businessman Aoyama wants to remarry seven years after the death of his wife. His best friend, a television producer, persuades him to audition for a fictional film for Aoyama to choose a wife. His choice falls on the shy Asami, with whom he actually falls in love. But gradually the first inconsistencies appear in Asami's résumé. After Aoyama and Asami spend a night together for the first time, she disappears without a trace. His inquiries into her are accompanied by other eerie omens.

In the end, Asami appears in Aoyama's house, where she paralyzes and tortures him. However, it is never really clear whether the torture is a dream or a reality, because the whole thing is shown as a possible dream through cuts and flashbacks.

publication

The film was shown for the first time at various film festivals around the world. It was released in Japanese cinemas on March 3, 2000. Cinema releases in numerous other countries followed, including in Germany on January 26, 2001.

reception

Critics largely praised the horror film, especially the "nightmare-like" ending. The negative voices complained, for example, that the film was too long and that the plot was only progressing slowly.

film-dienst wrote in the 2001-02 issue: "Horror drama staged with artistic restraint, which initially only allows minimal hints of the gruesome end, but then keeps the viewer in the dark as to whether it is a nightmare or reality."

The film won the FIPRESCI Prize and the KNF Prize at the Rotterdam International Film Festival 2000 . At Fantasporto , a festival for fantasy films, Audition received a “Special Mention” and competed for the main prize.
