The manga adaptation was released in Japanese cinemas on October 27, 2007 and grossed around US $ 20 million there, the greatest commercial success for director Miike up to that point. In Germany, the production went on sale directly on DVD on March 27, 2009.

action

The story takes place today at the legendary Suzuran High School in Japan, which is dominated by brutal youth gangs. The faculty is afraid of their students, especially the leaders of the organized gangs that are fighting for sole control. Lessons are impossible at the “School of Crows”. The brutal and shrewd gang leader, Tamao Serizawa, is the undisputed "king" of Suzuran - until one day newcomer Genji challenges him. The new student is the son of one of the dreaded yakuza bosses who, in order to be able to take over his father's business, has to conquer the educational establishment - but not even his father has managed to do that.

In order to be able to challenge and defeat Tamao, Genji first submits to the prevailing hierarchy of the Suzuran. His goal is to gather as many students as possible for the final battle against Tamao. With the help of a small entrance star, Ken Katagiri, he pulls the first class leader to his side, whereupon he and his followers join Genji. Gradually, he recruits other classes for himself.

At the end of the film there is a longed-for battle between the opposing camps. Genji defeats Tamao, but ultimately the pursued sole rule leads him into further disputes. In an open final he competes against Rinda-man, a so far undefeated, overpowering lone fighter who has not joined any gang.

Reviews

Derek Elley from Variety magazine highlighted the "dark gray-brown color scheme", the "techno-rock score" and the "graffiti-covered equipment".

For the German-language portal “molodezhnaja.ch” the film was “a successful film that is well worth seeing, a tough youth drama with a cool look, great stars and some fierce fights”. In contrast, the German portal "dasmanifest.com" did not consider the film to be the director's best, but it was "a disrespectful and over-the-top actioner that can only come from Japan".
