Takashi Miike (2011)

Takashi Miike ( Japanese 三 池 崇 史 Miike Takashi ; born August 24, 1960 in Yao , Osaka Prefecture ) is a Japanese director , film producer , screenwriter and actor . Miike is considered extremely productive. Since his debut in 1991 he has made 100 cinema, video and TV productions so far. Many of his films show cartoon-like , often obscene scenes of violence and abstract bloodbaths; the focus is mostly on merciless criminals and antiheroes. In particular, Miike deals with the topic of yakuza .

Life

youth

Miike comes from Yao, a place with many immigrants, mainly from Korea, and workers. His grandfather was stationed in China and Korea during World War II , and his father was born in Seoul . He worked as a welder, Miike's mother as a seamstress.

The city was characterized by poverty, so that many people worked for the yakuza . In an interview, Miike said that several of his schoolmates were children of Yakuza and added: “ I know several Yakuza personally. These are people like you and me. You just have a different way of communicating […] ”.

While in high school, he made contact with a group of motorcycle fans who regularly held races. He commented on the frequent deaths as follows:

Before the race you talked to a friend and a few minutes later he was dead. Two or three people died in motorcycle accidents every year. "

He gave up his dream of becoming a professional motorcyclist when one of his most talented friends only managed to get an average result in a professional race and Miike realized that his performance was not enough.

Way to television

By chance he heard a radio advertisement from the "Yokohama Technical School for Funk and Film" and since there was no entrance examination for this school, he applied. He moved to Yokohama and worked to finance his studies in a nightclub frequented by American GIs . Since the lessons seemed too abstract to him, he only attended school irregularly. A television producer was looking for an assistant at school to help produce a game show for no salary. Since all of Miike's classmates were busy with their theses, the school passed the job on to Miike. So he started working on the series Black Jack .

The permanent employees had fixed working hours because they were represented by a union . Therefore, the freelancers had to work overtime on unfinished business. Miike was appalled by the full-time employees who, in his opinion, prefer to live a comfortable life and produce uninteresting films for it. So he decided he never wanted to work for a manufacturing company.

Way to the movie

Miike continued to work as a freelancer for various television series, which were also produced by various film companies. For the employees of the film industry, Miike developed antipathies relatively quickly because he considered them arrogant and untalented. So he decided to stick with television. After he had worked as a freelancer on television dramas for about ten years, partly as a co-director, he came together with Shōhei Imamura , the founder of the film school in Yokohama. Imamura was looking for three assistant directors for his film Zegen and hired him as the third.

After that he continued working for the film. After two years he worked again with Imamura for the film Black Rain . In this film he played a small supporting role for the first time. At the beginning of the 1990s there was a boom in direct-to-video productions: This gave new directors the opportunity to produce and distribute their own films. The offer was made to Miike that he could produce the film Eyecatch Junction . During the preparation time for the film, he received the offer to replace a director in the film Lady Hunter . He agreed and shot Lady Hunter within two months before starting Eyecatch Junction .

reception

Miike gained worldwide fame in 2000 through the horror drama Audition and the Yakuza film Dead or Alive , both of which premiered at international film festivals.

2001 Ichi the Killer ,producedby Hideo Yamamoto based on a manga of thesame name, became a controversial hit. The BBFC refusedto showthe filmuncutin Great Britain , 15 minutes were missingin Hong Kong , and in the USA it was shown uncut, albeit without youth approval.

" With a variety of handwriting, speeds, and narrative modes, auteur filmmaker Miike [...] is obsessed with an infectious, if sometimes baffling, enthusiasm for the possibilities of cinema ." - A. O. Scott, The New York Times
One of the [...] most innovative and unpredictable directors in the world. “- Jamie Russell, BBC

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.
