Zegen (Original title: 女 衒 , Zegen , Eng. "The pimp") is a Japanese film by Shōhei Imamura from 1987 .
action
The film is a black comedy and begins in 1901. Iheiji Muraoka, a hairdresser, is employed by the Japanese government in Hong Kong and Manchuria with the aim of spying on the Russians. Muraoka invests his money in opening several brothels. It was only with the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 that his attitude towards Japanese politics changed.
criticism
"Zegen may not be a crucial work in Imamura's oeuvre, but it fits neatly into the worldview he has developed in his other works and for this reason alone it is worth seeing."
