Life
Ogata was interested in the theater while still at school and became a member of the Shinkokugeki ensemble after graduating from high school. He was a member of this theater group from 1958 to 1968. In his first film, Tōi hitotsu no michi , he played the lead role, a young boxer. He gained greater popularity through two television series Takōki (1965) and Hissatsu shikakenin (1972–1973). For his role of the devilish father Sōkichi Takeshita in Yoshitarō Nomuras Kichiku (1978) he has received several awards. In 1979 he played the serial killer Iwao Enokizu in the film Fukushū suru wa ware ni ari, directed by Shōhei Imamura . He achieved international fame in the role of the farmer Tatsuhei with the film The Ballad of Narayama , here again directed by Shōhei Imamura. The film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival . Directed by Paul Schrader , he played the role of the Japanese writer Yukio Mishima in Mishima - A Life in Four Chapters in 1985 . However, the film was never shown in Japan after protests. His best-known performance in an English language film was that of a calligrapher in The Bed Reading (1996), directed by Peter Greenaway . Here he played alongside Vivian Wu and Ewan McGregor .
He died of liver cancer on October 5, 2008. His sons Kanta (* 1966) and Naoto (* 1967) are also actors.
