The Ballad of Narayama ( Japanese 楢 山 節 考 Narayama Bushikō ) is a Japanese film by Shōhei Imamura from 1983 . action
The film is set in a small rural village in 19th century Japan where food shortages prevail. According to tradition, therefore, people who have reached the age of 70 must go to the distant Mount Narayama ( Ubasute ). The focus is on Orin, who is 69 years old and healthy, but notices that her neighbor is carrying his father up the mountain. In her senior year, Orin takes care of family and village affairs, she repeatedly punishes a family who hoards food and helps her younger son to find a wife. The film also shows the hard life of the villagers in some drastic scenes. Short vignettes from nature are faded in between the film's episodes: birds, snakes and other animals that hunt, see, sing, copulate and give birth to life.
criticism
- The Lexicon of International Films notes: "An outstanding film of terrible beauty, but which at no time aesthetizes horror."
- Roger Ebert gives the film four out of four points and notes that it cannot be a commercial success, not even in comparison to other artistic films. For that he is “too introspective, too fearless when it comes to dealing with cruelty, too“ Japanese ”. This makes it all the more a fascinating experience. "
