For the American painter, sculptor, photographer and actor Andrew Levitas, Minamata was the second feature film after his debut film Lullaby (2014). The shooting took place from January 2019 in Minamata, Serbia and Montenegro. The first screening of the film took place on February 21, 2020 as part of the Berlin Film Festival .
