action

In 2005 NASA discovered an Earth-like planet on which one hopes for intelligent life. Via a satellite station in Hawaii , it sends a signal to a special satellite in orbit on earth, which amplifies the signal and sends it in the direction of the newly discovered planet. Around the same time, Alex Hopper is celebrating his birthday in a bar with his brother Stone. He tries to get a woman's attention by getting her a portion of "Chicken Burrito". To do this, he breaks into a nearby shop and is put in front of her by the police. From his angry brother, Alex learns that the woman is Samantha, the daughter of Navy commander Admiral Shane, who in turn is the superior of Stone Hopper. To discipline his brother, Stone then orders that Alex enroll with him in the Navy.

The USS John Paul Jones
The Myōkō

Years later, Alex is a lieutenant in the Navy and a weapons officer on the guided missile destroyer USS John Paul Jones . Alex is now with Samantha, but does not dare to ask her father, the admiral, for his consent for the wedding. At the same time, the major international naval maneuver RIMPAC begins off the coast of Hawaii . After the opening ceremony, Alex clashes with Japanese Captain Nagata, leading to a reprimand from Admiral Shane. As another of many missteps, this is believed to lead to Alex's expulsion from the Navy once the maneuver is over.

When the international fleet runs out, five objects are discovered in space that are approaching Earth in formation. One of them collides with a satellite in orbit and crashes in the middle of Hong Kong . The remaining missiles land in the ocean off Hawaii. Therefore, with the USS Sampson under Stone Hopper's command, the Myōkō under Nagata's command and the John Paul Jones with Alex on board, three destroyers are sent to investigate the signals received. The flight object recovered in Hong Kong is suspected to be a communication unit of non-terrestrial origin.

The three destroyers discover a structure protruding from the water in the sea off Hawaii, which the radar devices cannot detect. Alex is sent off to investigate with the crew members Raikes and Beast. The structure turns out to be a spaceship that awakens when Alex touches it and creates an energy shield around 200 nautical miles in diameter, which cuts off the three ships and the Hawaiian archipelago from the outside world. When three more alien spaceships emerge from the water and take up position opposite the three destroyers, the Sampson opens fire. In response, she is destroyed by one of the spaceships, and Stone Hopper is also killed. The John Paul Jones is also attacked and damaged, killing her commanding officers. Alex has to take command as the highest ranking officer. He orders the attack, but breaks it off on the advice of the crew after the Myōkō has also been sunk, instead to rescue survivors from the water and withdraw.

The enemy spaceships, which are always close to the surface of the water, cannot be detected by radar or by sight. Captain Nagata, who is one of the survivors of the Myōkō , suggests locating them using the NOAA's tsunami warning system . The system reports wave movements via a network of buoys , and the displacement of the water from the spaceships enables their location to be determined. Alex hands over command to Nagata, who lets the spaceships under fire, risking being spotted himself. It is possible to destroy two of the spaceships. The remaining third spaceship is now hunting the destroyer.

In the meantime, Samantha and former soldier Mick Canales discovered that a squad of aliens had taken over the satellite station on Oahu . They meet the scientist Cal, who has escaped from there, who suspects that the aliens want to make the station operational in order to establish contact with their homeworld, since their own communication station was destroyed during the approach to earth. Cal manages to establish a radio link with the John Paul Jones , and Samantha asks Alex to destroy the satellite station.

Alex uses the cover of the coast to ambush the remaining spaceship. When it reaches the John Paul Jones , Alex and Nagata shoot with sniper rifles at the bridge of the opposing ship and destroy the glazing that served as a glare shield for the light-sensitive aliens. Blinded by the just rising sun, they can not escape the concentrated attack of the John Paul Jones and are destroyed, but can still set free two self-sufficient fighting machines that cut into the John Paul Jones and literally dissolve the destroyer from within. Alex's crew escapes in lifeboats.

The USS Missouri

Meanwhile, Samantha and her companions succeed in sabotaging the efforts of the aliens. However, in order to finally destroy the facility, the crew of the John Paul Jones reactivated the decommissioned battleship USS Missouri , which had been converted into a museum and whose outdated technology they were initially unable to operate. Only with the help of the veterans on board the Missouri can they get the ship afloat again and attack the last and largest spacecraft of the aliens. With a feint, Alex succeeds in destroying the spaceship together with the energy shield generators, which leads to the collapse of the energy shield. Just when it succeeds the commando team of space aliens on O'ahu to take the satellite system in operation is this the last remaining floor of the Missouri destroyed. Shortly before its demise, the large alien spaceship releases three of the fighting machines that have already sunk the John Paul Jones . However, before they reach the battleship, they are destroyed by incoming fighter planes from the RIMPAC fleet.

The officers involved are recognized by Admiral Shane for their bravery during previous events. When the ceremony ends, Alex approaches Shane for Samantha's hand. He initially rejects Alex, but then invites him to a portion of "Chicken Burrito" to pursue the topic further.

At the end of the credits you see three children in Scotland, who find another small, crashed spaceship.

background

Naming

The film and its title Battleship are based on the board game Sink Ships by the game manufacturer Hasbro , which is reminiscent of the hunt for alien spaceships using the tsunami warning system. The shape of the artillery projectiles is modeled on the pieces of the plug-in version of the travel game. Moreover, the film title in relation to standing out of service is Battleship (= Engl. Battleship ) USS Missouri , which in the end will decide the fight. It was already discussed on film in the red alert .

occupation

The actors Alexander Skarsgård and Brooklyn Decker with director Peter Berg at WonderCon 2012

The Canadian actor Taylor Kitsch , who was released in early 2012 with the film John Carter - Between Two Worlds , took on one of the leading roles in Battleship with the character Alex Hopper . In addition to Kitsch, Jeremy Renner was also in discussion for the role, but he had to cancel due to scheduling conflicts with another project. Kitsch worked again with the actor Jesse Plemons - in the role of the fleet officer Ordy - who, like Kitsch, had starred in the television series Friday Night Lights directed by Peter Berg. The Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård was used as a counterpart to the role of Kitsch and embodies the straightforward brother of Alex Hopper, Stone Hopper. The last name Hopper was chosen in homage to Admiral Grace Hopper , a computer pioneer in the service of the United States Navy Reserve , after whom the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Hopper (DDG-70) stationed in Pearl Harbor is named.

Teresa Palmer and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley auditioned for the role of Samantha . The role was eventually assigned to Brooklyn Decker , who plays Alex Hopper's lover. The former model was delighted to be involved in filming with director Peter Berg because she appreciated his more serious portrayal of women. She plays the daughter of Admiral Shane, who is played by Liam Neeson . Neeson was approached by Peter Berg and said yes, as he still knew the director as an actor from the eighties. However, he limited himself to a supporting role, for which he only had to shoot for a week.

At the end of July 2010 it was announced that the R&B singer Rihanna would make her acting debut in Battleship . According to Peter Berg, Rihanna was a good cast for the role, and he, along with fellow actor Brooklyn Decker, praised her attitude to work while filming. Rihanna herself said she enjoyed filming because she only played a supporting role in the production of Battleship and did not have to take responsibility as in her music productions. After appearing in the documentary Wounded Warriors' Resilience , Gregory D. Gadson also made his feature film debut in Battleship , where he plays the role of Mick Canales, a soldier who has lost both legs. Gadson, himself a highly decorated officer in the US Army, lost his legs in 2007, which have since been replaced by prostheses. In the meantime, Gadson at Fort Belvoir in North Carolina is the first and so far only garrison commander in the US armed forces to have both legs amputated. Berg, who had learned of Gadson through the media, offered him the role in Battleship , which Gadson gladly accepted. Real veterans who had previously served on the USS Missouri, some of them as early as World War II , were selected to fill the roles of veterans . Acting Secretary of State for the Navy, Ray Mabus, can be seen in a cameo as the commander of the USS Ronald Reagan .

production

The shooting of Battleship took place among other things at the end of August 2010. It was filmed on the Hawaiian islands of Maui and Oahu . Filming in the Australian city of Gold Coast did not take place due to a lack of government funding. It was also shot in San Antonio , Texas and San Diego and Los Angeles , California . Further recordings were made in the Chinese metropolis of Hong Kong , as well as studio recordings that were produced in the Raleigh Studios in Baton Rouge , Louisiana , among others . The news sequences showing the uprisings during the impending apocalypse are real-life footage recorded during the 2011 riots in England . The scene in which Alex Hopper breaks into a grocery store looking for a chicken burrito is modeled on a surveillance video that became known as a viral video on YouTube .

Peter Berg decided not to produce Battleship in 3D. Although it was a good idea for a film with a lot of animated elements, the director was not a fan of 3D films, which is why he decided, in agreement with Universal Studios, to bring Battleship to theaters in 2D.

Despite multiple criticism, the film brought commercial success. Battleship, for example, displaced the science fiction film The Hunger Games - The Hunger Games at the opening weekend with 390,000 moviegoers from number one on the German cinema charts. Including the preview screenings, Battleship even recorded 425,000 visitors on the opening weekend, making the film the most successful cinema release of the year in Germany at the time. In the following week, Battleship remained in the cinema charts with a further 200,000 viewers in Germany, ahead of Turkish for Beginners and The Hunger Games . In the third week, the film fell to fourth place in the cinema charts in Germany with only around 65,000 visitors, behind The Lucky One and the successful newcomer American Pie: The Class Reunion and Marvel's The Avengers .

The film achieved similar successes in other countries: In 24 of the 26 countries in which Battleship took place on 11/12. When it started April, the film made it to number one in the box office, in South Korea Battleship had the third most successful launch day of an English-language film at the time. Battleship grossed around $ 58 million on the opening weekend in the 26 countries . In Russia, where the film opened a week later, Battleship posted revenues of around $ 10.7 million, giving the film a 76% market share. In China, it had the largest universal film release ever, with an estimated $ 17 million in revenue from 2,287 screenings. After its international success, expectations for the late US theatrical release of Battleship were high. However, the film failed to meet them when it grossed just $ 9.5 million on launch day and no more than $ 25.4 million on launch weekend.

Overall, with an estimated production budget of 209 million US dollars in the United States, over 65 million US dollars were made, and Battleship grossed around 303 million US dollars worldwide.

Reviews

"Tumber Attempt to expand the game 'Sink Ships' into a feature film, the design of which is based on the 'Transformers' series. The film turns into a martial, unreflected militaristic and nationalistic battle of material full of logical breaks. "

“With 'Battleship' director Berg serves up a turbulent sea voyage under steam, but without depth with a lot of childish humor and cracking action. Anyone who can cope with the openly practiced US patriotism in this 'Transformers at Sea' and simply wants to be impressed by the orgies of destruction is in the right film with 'Battleship'. "

- Carsten Baumgardt from Filmstarts

“When a film is based on the game 'Sink Ships', the only thing that can really come out is garbage. But 'Battleship' has completely different problems than the outrageous story. For example the really bad actors, especially Rihanna, who makes her disastrous film debut here. "

- Hannah Pilarczyk, Der Spiegel

Adaptations

On April 24, 2012, the American publishing group Random House published the novel Battleship of the same name , which was written by the science fiction author Peter David . It is based on the script by Erich and Jon Hoeber and reproduces the events of the film as an adaptation of the plot. A new version of a Battleship video game was also released on April 20, 2012 . Produced by Double Helix Games and distributed by Activision Blizzard , the game combines the genres of action and strategy. In a subplot of the film, the player fights the aliens on the Hawaiian coast, but at the same time commands several ships off the coast.

Awards

In 2012, Rihanna received a Teen Choice Award in the Choice Movie Breakout category. At the Annie Awards , Aron Bonar, Rick Hankins, Florent Andorra, Willi Geiger and Florian Witzel were nominated for a prize in the Animated Effects in a Live Action Production category.

In the 2013 Golden Raspberry nominations , Battleship received seven nominations in the six categories "Worst Film", "Worst Supporting Actor" for Liam Neeson , "Worst Supporting Actress" for Brooklyn Decker and for Rihanna , "Worst Director" for Peter Berg , "Worst Screenplay." "For Jon and Erich Hoeber as well as" worst ensemble "for the entire cast. Rihanna ultimately won the Golden Raspberry for Worst Supporting Actress.
