Paul Martin Rubell (born September 6, 1952 in Los Angeles ) is an American film editor .

Life

After Paul Rubell graduated from UCLA in English literature , a friend got him an interview with the film editor Alan Balsam to work as an assistant editor on his low-budget film Loose Shoes . He sold Rubell as a highly experienced editor and spent an entire weekend teaching him the working methods of film editing . When Balsam asked Rubell during the job interview to check the film for synch ( synchronicity ), Rubell took the film roles, locked himself in a room and called his friend to find out what was synch . He got the job and, in addition to the appearance of Loose Shoes in 1980, three other films appeared in which he assisted with the editing, namely The Golden Moment: An Olympic Love Story , The Changeling and Popeye - The Sailor with the Hard Blow .

Rubell made the next big step in his career when he became assistant to the film editor Lou Lombardo and, according to his own account, learned everything from him ("He was my mentor.") . It was also Lombardo who recommended the director Andrew Davis to use Rubell as editor for his horror film Horror am Mill Creek , which was also his first independent edit. Rubell then spent nearly a decade editing television series and films before working for DNA - The Island of Dr. Moreau was first engaged for a major feature film.

In recent years Rubell has become known primarily for editing films by directors Michael Bay and Michael Mann . So he edited for Bay Die Insel , Transformers , Transformers - Die Rache and Transformers: Era des Extinction . For Mann he edited Insider , Collateral , Miami Vice and Public Enemies , the first two of which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Editing . Speaking of his frequent work for both directors, he said he feared they both believe he has each inherited each other's bad habits. So he would probably cut too fast for man and too slow for Bay ("I suspect they each think I've picked up bad habits from the other. Initially, I'll be cutting too fast for Mann and too slow for Bay . ") .

Paul Rubell is a member of the American Cinema Editors .
