action

Tobey Marshall has an auto repair shop in Mount Kisco ( Westchester County ), which he inherited from his father. At night he takes part in illegal street races. One day, ex- NASCAR driver Dino Brewster shows up and offers him 25% of the proceeds if he completes the last Ford Mustang built by Carroll Shelby . Dino had taken Tobey's girlfriend (Anita) years before. Nevertheless, Tobey agrees against the advice of his friends, as the workshop is about to foreclosure . Once the project is complete, Tobey can fetch an even higher purchase price by demonstrating the promised top speed of 230 miles per hour (370 km / h) against Dino's will. Dino offers Tobey a race for the entire sales proceeds. Tobey's friend Pete also takes part. The three of them each drive a Koenigsegg Agera R : Dino a red, Pete a white and Tobey a silver-gray. Dino claims they are in his uncle's possession. Shortly before the finish line, Tobey is in the lead ahead of Pete. Dino rams Pete, so that he crashes and dies. While Tobey abandons the race and tries to help his friend, Dino wins the race and escapes. Tobey is arrested; the police blame him for Pete's death as the red Agera R that Dino was driving cannot be found. In addition, the two remaining vehicles are reported as stolen.

When he comes out of prison after two years, Tobey wants to take part in an illegal street race again. He can convince the buyer of the Mustang to lend him the car. However, he insists that Julia accompany the trip. Tobey now has 45 hours to get from New York to San Francisco . On his drive, he made the organizer Monarch aware of himself with a daring chase in Detroit and thus qualified for the race. However, since he is breaking several laws and violating his probation requirements by leaving the state , the police are also on his heels. Dino wants to prevent Tobey from taking part in the race. He is therefore offering his Lamborghini Sesto Elemento as a bounty for Tobey. With the help of his friends, Tobey and Julia still make it to San Francisco, where his start message is accepted despite a 23-minute delay. During the trip, Tobey and Julia got closer.

Shortly thereafter, the two suffered a traffic accident in which Julia injured and the Mustang destroyed. After Julia is taken care of in the hospital, Tobey starts looking for a new car for the race and calls Anita, Dino's fiancée, to get it. This has since found out that the red Agera is actually in Dinos possession and tells Tobey where to find it. When he shows up at the start with the car the next morning, Dino cannot do anything without at the same time revealing his guilt for Pete's death.

This is how the race starts, and over time all participants except Dino and Tobey are eliminated due to the influence of the state . Shortly before the finish line, Dino tries a ram like he did with Pete. Tobey anticipates this maneuver and applies the brakes shortly beforehand, so that the attack comes to nothing, causing the Lamborghini to leave the road and roll over. He stays on the roof and catches fire. After a moment to think about it, Tobey turns around and saves Dino's life. Then he leaves him to the police and drives to the destination, where he can be arrested.

Six months later Tobey is released from prison again and picked up by Julia in a new Ford Mustang.

Reviews

The film received a negative review from the game magazine GameStar :

"We have already seen the film adaptation of the racing game and would rather have gasoline poured into our eyes than recommend this junk."

Frank Arnold from epd Film was also disappointed with the film:

“It's actually astonishing that the success of THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS series has so far hardly attracted any successors. The need for speed based on a video game is now trying to remedy this. Moviegoers do not necessarily expect polished characters from such a template, but rather adrenaline rushes. However, they are comparatively modest. Street racing, illegal street races with sophisticated sports cars, surrounds itself here with a touch of anti-establishment, but the high-tech and other aids presented speak a different language. "

The need-for-speed movie met with mixed reactions on other pages of the film:

“There are some furious interludes to be seen, shot in unconventional shots, which make the film worth seeing on its own - even without 3D glasses on. Need for Speed is a surprisingly strong, because truthful and junk free actioner with deductions in the B-note. "

- Janosch Leuffen : kino-zeit.de

But also on other pages to positive reactions:

"All in all, Need for Speed surprised us very positively, the mixture of well-known plots that are to be understood and delighted as a homage, character figures instead of pure action muscle men, more authenticity and yet really pulling in with racing scenes with fast and iconic speedsters goes absolutely and puts the [sic] first films of the Fast & Furious series in the shade. By the way, we saw the film in the original and hope that the synchro conveys exactly the same joke and atmosphere. For fans of the Need for Speed game, the film is a must anyway, but it is also advisable for everyone else who wants to see a racing blockbuster in which you can easily drag your better half into it. We really came with a big grin from Need for Speed [...] "
