High school student Cassie leads a normal life with her parents and little brother Sam. One day an alien spaceship appears on Earth. The aliens, who are called "the others" by humans, begin to destroy human civilization without making contact with humans. First of all, all electrical devices and machines are rendered inoperable by an electromagnetic pulse . In the second wave of attacks, earthquakes trigger tsunamis and destroy all coastal regions. The third wave of attacks is a flu virus that is spread by birds and kills many people, including Cassie's mother.

Cassie, her father and brother then flee and find accommodation in a refugee camp. One day a US Army convoy, led by Colonel Vosch, reaches the refugee camp and warns of the forthcoming fourth wave of attacks. He announces that he wants to bring all residents of the camp to a safe military base. Since the transport capacities are limited, the children and young people are taken away first, including Cassie's brother Sam. After the children have been transported away, the adults are informed that the fourth wave has already begun and that the "others" can take possession of human bodies. Panic then breaks out and an argument ensues in which the soldiers shoot all the adults. Cassie, who missed the convoy's departure, witnesses it and watches her father get killed.

Cassie heads to the military base to find her brother. On the way there, she is hit in the thigh by a sniper and passes out. Cassie wakes up in a bed on a farm. A young man named Evan Walker took her away and treated her. When Cassie finds her pistol in one of Evan's hiding spots, she begins to distrust him and tries to escape. However, Evan catches up with them and regains their trust. Nevertheless, Cassie wants to get to the military base to find her brother again. Evan joins her and they both get closer. In one night they are attacked by several possessed "others". Evan is able to kill the attackers and confesses to Cassie that he is also “another” and that he was made a “sleeper” during a previous visit by the aliens. It was activated with the arrival of the spaceship. Because of his affection for Cassie, however, he had doubts about the goals of the "others" and told her that Colonel Vosch and the military were also controlled by the "others". Nevertheless, Cassie leaves Evan behind and continues to the military base alone.

In the meantime, the children and young people are being trained as soldiers on the military base in order to fight against the approaching fifth wave of attacks. Among them are Sam and Ben, a high school friend of Cassie's. The child soldiers are shown how to spot the enemy and they are given an implant that acts as a tracking device. The child soldiers are equipped with sights with which they can recognize people who are possessed by "others" and are ordered to go on their first combat mission. When the soldier Ringer wants to desert in a battle and removes her implant, she is shown in the sights of the other soldiers as "other". Ben realizes that they are used by the military to kill people and that they are the fifth wave themselves. Then Ben has all the implants of his squad removed and the soldiers desert.

Ben himself returns to the military base under the pretext of being the only survivor of his squad and tells Colonel Vosch that he has seen through the plans. When suddenly several explosions shake the base, Ben flees. After further explosions, Vosch has the base evacuated. Cassie, who has meanwhile arrived at the base to find her brother, meets Ben on her search. When the two are stopped by soldiers from the "Other", Evan appears and saves them. Evan, who followed Cassie into the base, tells them that he triggered the explosions and that the base is being destroyed.

Shortly before Sam is about to be evacuated on a transport plane, he is rescued by Cassie and Ben. With Ringer's support, the three of them escape from the base. The refugees plan to then free the children and young people from the hands of the "others". It remains unclear how the “others” should ultimately be defeated.

production

The film is based on the bestseller “The Fifth Wave” by Rick Yancey from 2013. This was followed in 2014 by the sequel “The Infinite Sea” and in 2016 the final third volume “The Last Star”. The film was produced by Columbia Pictures . It is still open whether the film and the plot that is not yet completed in it will be continued.

criticism

The Cinema praises the film for the low-key staging, but criticized that the action remains on the surface. Oddsmeter.de sees potential in the film, but certifies the work as a whole "uninteresting figures, mediocre effects and, above all, too many unanswered questions".

The film service emphasized that the "uninspired science fiction film composed of well-known motifs" was "impressive in its growing skepticism towards everything soldier", but "soon lost itself between the clichés of teenage romances and the epigone 'young adult' Dystopias of Contemporary Pop Culture ”.
