Seventh Son (English for seventh son ) is the film adaptation of the fantasy children's book Spook - The Student of the Ghost Hunter by Joseph Delaney , the first book in the Spook cycle . The protagonist is 14-year-old Tom Ward, the seventh son of a seventh son, whose adventures are told as a student of a ghost hunter. The cinema release in Germany was on March 5, 2015.

action

The ghost hunter John Gregory, the last of 1000, arrested the chief witch mother Malkin and thus prevented the defeat of the people against the ghosts. After ten years she managed to escape and she built up her power again. John Gregory is still in the way. He only has time until the next blood moon to train his student Tom to fight the darkest black magic - a lesson that otherwise takes years. This first shows his human side, but then fights bravely against the dangers. After mixed feelings towards Alice, a half-witch, he learns from his own mother, killed by his mother Malkin, that he is also a half-blood. His mother gave him an amulet that increased Malkin's power and protects against witchcraft. Alice steals this amulet under the influence of Malkin. In the subsequent pursuit, Tom falls into a ravine and is initially believed to be dead. When Gregory and his companions finally attack Malkin, Malkin can initially take control of the ghost hunter with the amulet. When Alice hears of Tom's death, she takes the amulet off Malkin. She joins the ghost hunter's team and Malkin can be defeated. Tom takes on the role of ghost hunter while Gregory sets off with an unknown destination.

reception

"" Seventh Son "is a listless youth fantasy film from the test tube, which only impresses with its opulent CGI effects."

Björn Helbig criticizes the forgetfulness of history and a racist tenor of the film on kino-zeit.de: “In general, it is very questionable how unreflected and forgotten about history is dealt with here with the subject of“ witches ”. Witches: evil, pyre, that's it! Even the existence of the half-bloods, who are friendly towards people, does not change the basic racist tenor of the film. "

Miriam Eck criticizes the obvious misogyny and racism in flip books: “Now you could simply dismiss the film as entertaining trash. Unfortunately, however, this film is so obviously misogynistic and racist that it leaves you speechless. All “good” heroes are white and male. All evil mythical creatures are black people, Asians or Arabs. One has the feeling that every racist cliché was also taken up. The best example: a black woman who was visually stereotypically identified as African can transform herself into a leopard. That wouldn't even be so bad if her figure wasn't reduced to just that. Your intentions or thoughts? - Not of interest. "
