Thomas Tull (* around 1970 ) is an American entrepreneur and film producer . From 2000 to 2017 Tull was CEO of the film production company Legendary Pictures, which he founded .

life and career

Tull grew up as the son of a single mother in Binghamton , New York . He graduated from Hamilton College .

After graduating from college, he gave up his original plan of a legal career and started a chain of laundromats . He later acquired various tax offices, which he then sold again at a profit. Tull also served as Chief of Operations for Tax Services of America. Then he got into his first private equity business. He became an employee of the Convex Group, where he rose to the position of President of the company. He first came into contact with the entertainment industry through various projects .

In 2000 he finally founded the production studio Legendary Pictures . During a discussion with a manager of a film studio in 2003, Tull recognized the possibility of financing large film projects through private equity . He was ultimately able to accumulate $ 600 million through stock deals. In 2005 he signed a collaboration agreement with Warner Bros. to co-produce and co-fund 40 films over a period of seven years. The first film projects were Batman Begins and Superman Returns .

Legendary was the first of its kind to fund major Hollywood films through private capital and hedge fund investments. In 2005, this business model earned him IDD Magazine's “Media / Entertainment Deal of the Year” award.

After the Warner Bros. contract expired, Tull announced in July 2013 that Legendary Pictures would partner with Universal Pictures in 2014 . The contract is for a period of 5 years. In January 2017, he stepped down as CEO of Legendary Pictures.

As of 2015, films produced by Legendary had a box office of more than $ 12 billion worldwide.

Tull serves on the Board of Trustees for the American Film Institute (AFI), the San Diego Zoo, and the Zoological Society of San Diego. Since 2009 he has also been an investor in the American football team Pittsburgh Steelers .

Tull is married and has twin sons. He lives with his family in Calabasas, California . His personal wealth is estimated at around $ 1 billion.
