The Town (Original title: The Town ) is a feature film by the US-American director and actor Ben Affleck from 2010 . The plot is based on Chuck Hogan's novel Endgame ( Prince of Thieves ) and focuses on a group of bank robbers operating in the Boston suburb of Charlestown .
The film premiered at the 67th Venice International Film Festival on September 8, 2010. In Germany and Switzerland, it opened in theaters on September 23, 2010, and in Austria one day later.
action
The film is about a group of robbers who successfully raid banks and money trucks in Charlestown , with the tips and information for the raids coming from the gang boss Fergie, disguised as a small florist. The group is led by Doug MacRay, son of former bank robber Stephen MacRay, who also robbed banks for Fergie. Other members of the group are Albert and Desmond, two friends of Doug's also from Charlestown, and James Coughlin, whose family Doug stayed with after his father's arrest. Doug and James have a very brotherly relationship with each other. The violence-prone James once committed a murder to protect Doug. James went to jail for nine years for this murder.
In a bank robbery, James decides to take Claire Keesey, the branch manager, hostage for safety. However, since they can escape undetected, they release them again a short time later. In retrospect, it turns out that Claire also lives in Charlestown. Fearing that they will be exposed by her, the group decides to have Doug follow them. During the shadowing, however, Doug is approached by Claire, and so gradually a love affair develops between the two. James learns of the relationship by accident, but hides it from the other members of the group.
Meanwhile, the FBI agent Adam Frawley tries to solve the bank robbery. Although he can identify Doug's group as the bank robbers, he cannot prove the robberies to them. After another robbery on a money truck, which resulted in heavy exchanges of fire with the police, Doug's plans change. He wants to get out and start a new life with Claire far away. James feels let down by Doug and is disappointed in him. Gang boss Fergie blackmails Doug to join in the next robbery. He threatens to kill Claire. Fergie also tells Doug that he made Doug's mother addicted to drugs when Doug's father tried to quit. Doug allows himself to be blackmailed and agrees to participate in another heist on the Fenway Park baseball stadium . Claire, meanwhile, learns of Doug's identity as a bank robber from Agent Frawley and doesn't want to hear from him anymore. A later discussion between the two shows that they still love each other.
Agent Frawley manages to find the location of the next robbery through the blackmail of Doug's ex-girlfriend Krista, James' sister. The attack succeeds, but the group is surrounded by the FBI. In a first firefight, Desmond is shot by the special forces. Through a suicide campaign by Albert, Doug and James manage to escape. James is caught by Agent Frawley shortly afterwards. After some thought, he announced that he would give up, only to immediately resume fire on the policemen, although he was out of ammunition - he would rather die than go back to prison. He is shot dead by the police.
Doug is the only one who manages to escape. After killing the gang boss and his bodyguard, he still wants to start a new life with Claire, but finds that the FBI is forced to lure him into a trap. She warns him without the FBI noticing. He leaves town alone and leaves her with a bag with part of his looted fortune, a love letter and a tangerine . The mandarins (Engl. Tangerine ) is an indication of the birthplace of Doug's mother, Tangerine in Orange County , of which he had previously told Claire. The last shots of the film show Doug in a secluded house on a lake in the south, waiting for a reunion with Claire "in this or the next world".
In the Extended Cut with an alternate ending, Doug is shot and killed by the gangsters that Doug and James had previously beaten up while trying to leave town.
