With grossing US $ 269.8 million, it ranks 20th in a global comparison of 2008 films .

action

In the Mesolithic Age , the remote, rather backward mountain tribe of the Yagahl lived off the hunt for huge mammoths , which are called "Mannak" in the film. Constant environmental changes lead to shifts in the periodic arrival of the animals and thus increasingly threaten the livelihood of the tribe. In this phase, a mysterious, orphaned girl with striking blue eyes joins the village community: Evolet, the only survivor of another clan. The arrival causes the shaman “old mother” to make an initially gloomy prophecy with a good outcome. She foresees the early end of her tribe's hunter's existence, which is initiated with “four-legged demons ” during the “last hunt”. She also believes in a powerful warrior who, with Evolet as a companion, leads the troubled tribe into a new, civilized life. A short time later, young D'leh, son of a brave leader who once set out to find alternative diets, falls in love with Evolet and promises that it will always be in his heart.

Years later, the now grown-up D'leh proves himself against his opponent Ka'Ren - he succeeds in killing a powerful Mannak bull almost single-handedly - which gives him the right to Evolet and the "white spear", the visible symbol of the Yagahl -Leadership, secures. However, since his triumph came about by chance and was not based on courage and bravery, the victorious hunter, following his conscience, returns the illegitimate leadership dignity to Tic'Tic, his fatherly mentor.

On the day after the prophesied last hunt, the snow-covered settlement is attacked by mounted, mysterious warriors of a prehistoric high culture . Without any resistance worth mentioning, they slaughter some of the villagers and kidnap Evolet and other members of the tribe. D'leh escapes this fate because he was not in the village at the time of the attack. With a small group of survivors, his foster father Tic'Tic, his rival Ka'Ren and the young Baku, he takes up the chase - he wants to save Evolet at all costs. The leader of the slave hunters desires Evolet, but still punishes her with lashes when she leaves a trail of jewelry, hoping for rescue, and he notices this.

During their exhausting journey, the group of four traverses different climatic zones far away from home with unexpected dangers that go beyond their previous experience. The unprepared pursuers catch the brutal kidnappers in a tropical swampy landscape, but a first attempt at liberation fails miserably when they are suddenly attacked by terror birds . Baku and Ka'Ren are captured and enslaved by the alerted riders. From then on, Tic'Tic and D'leh follow as a duo in the footsteps of their abducted relatives and encounter strange cultures that were also haunted by the slave hunters. Thanks to a saber-toothed tiger (called “spear tooth ” in the film), which he previously rescued and who recognizes D'leh and therefore does not attack, D'leh joins battle-hardened warriors who see him as the redeeming figure prophesied to them. In the meantime he learns of his father's motivation to leave the tribe. Up until that point, he had mistakenly considered him a coward.

On their march, D'leh's small group has an enormous number of visitors: Soon a whole army of different ethnicities will gather around him until they finally discover an unknown and cruel civilization with a regime of terror. This culture is strongly reminiscent of the ancient Egyptians , the shipping of the newly captured slaves is strongly reminiscent of the shipping on the Nile. This culture is ruled by a legendary being, the "Almighty", a veiled figure who is almost always inside a palace. In this unimaginable and inhuman high culture, the enslaved workers are used to build monumental pyramids, including the Yagahl. Evolet is spared as the leader of the slavers wants to keep her to himself - but she refuses his affection. When it is discovered that he has reserved a slave for himself without authorization, he is arrested. At the same time Evolet's scars on the hand, which were created by the lashes at the time and have the shape of the “ sky hunter ”, are interpreted by the frightened priests as a divine sign - the imminent arrival of the only man to be feared who could succeed, the “Almighty “To oppose.

Meanwhile the warriors have already advanced to the city. Tic'Tic separates himself from the warriors and can thus prevent a three-man reconnaissance party from betraying the camp. But he dies in the fight against the three and gives the white spear to D'leh, who at first hesitantly rejects it, but then changes his mind. Together with the other warriors, he mingles with the slaves. Some weapons are hidden in the sand. Incited by their respective tribal members, there is an armed uprising. D'leh also manages to panic the Mannaks, who are kept as workhorses and deprived of their tusks, who then flee down a large ramp and trample the hurrying soldiers of high culture. Now the priests threaten to let horses tear Evolet apart . They offer D'leh to release Evolet and his tribe members if the fighters withdraw in return. At first D'leh agrees, but when it is announced that the other tribes must remain as slaves, he changes his mind: He takes his spear, hurls it up the stairs of the pyramid and pierces the "Almighty" standing there. His corpse falls down the pyramid and reveals a pale human body under the clothes. So the belief that this was a god is broken, and even the last doubters are now fighting against their enslavement.

The leader of the slave hunters grabs Evolet and escapes with her on a horse. However, she takes an arrow from his quiver and thrusts it into his stomach. Both fall from their horses. D'leh rushes to his beloved Evolet to take her in his arms. But the dying slave hunter can shoot an arrow at Evolet to show D'leh that Evolet is his only. D'leh then kills him in anger. Evolet dies in his arms. The "old mother", who followed the events through her mental abilities over a distance, transfers her last life force to Evolet and dies, but Evolet is alive again. D'leh, Evolet and the rest of the Yagahl say goodbye to their newfound friends, the Naku people, and return to their village. The film ends with the contemplation of a hopeful and future-oriented sowing in the familiar mountain region. A new beginning is given by the cultivation of useful plants , which D'leh were given by the chief of the Naku when he left.

background

10,000 BC was filmed in New Zealand , South Africa and Namibia , among others . Roland Emmerich wrote the screenplay for the film with Harald Kloser , based on an idea for a primeval hero story that, according to his own statement, had come to him ten years earlier. The development of a scenario initially had to wait because Emmerich had meanwhile implemented The Day After Tomorrow .

The original plan was to release the film on July 27, 2007 in the United States . Due to Paramount Pictures' sudden exit from financing, production was delayed, as was the move to Warner Bros. , which made less capital available to Emmerich. Finally, the US theatrical release was postponed to March 7, 2008. In Germany the film ran a day earlier. The world premiere took place on February 26, 2008 in Berlin .

Numerous word games are built into the film. When naming their hero D'leh, Kloser and Emmerich reflected on their German-speaking roots, because D'leh can no longer be read backwards than the word "hero". The name of D'leh's lover, "Evolet", can also be seen as an approximate anagram of "The Love". As with Stargate , Emmerich was inspired by Ancient Egypt and the Giza Pyramids , which he visited from a young age. In the absence of historical documents about this time, he had the freedom to "invent things" and be creative. The film explains that the “Almighty” and his followers came from a submerged empire that is reminiscent of the legendary island of Atlantis . This rumor is confirmed by Evolet's brief glance when she sees a rather modern map of the world on an altar, where the island of Atlantis next to Africa is clearly visible.

Another source of his ideas was the book Fingerprints of the Gods by Graham Hancock , in which he deals with the formation of the pyramids. A documentation on the Discovery Channel that dealt with mammoths also influenced him, as the necessary trick technology was now available to depict these animals realistically. Last but not least, his enthusiasm for the film In the Beginning Was Fire and for Robert E. Howard's work Conan the Cimmerian , which had provided the novel for films such as Conan the Barbarian , Conan the Destroyer and Conan 3D , and in the fictional Hyborian Age plays. Howard settled this around the time of 10,000 BC. Chr.

In the same year a so-called mockbuster was created with 100 million BC , which was produced by The Asylum .

The cost of production was estimated at $ 105 million.

reception

“Prehistoric adventure with magnificent landscape shots, but wavering too indecisively between a solid cinema adventure and a fairytale fantasy film. Despite the overwhelming effects, the film does not live up to its epic claim. "

Nevertheless, the film was a success for Roland Emmerich with the audience, dominated the US box office charts on the opening weekend and grossed around 270 million US dollars worldwide. The film, which started with 729 copies, also reached the top of the cinema charts on the first weekend in Germany and Austria with 278,701 visitors. In Austria, 36,554 cinema-goers saw the film on the first weekend. A total of 876,223 visitors saw the film in Germany.

The ratings, on the other hand, are rather mixed. In the IMDb , the film has a rating of 5/10 stars with around a hundred thousand reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , the film only received a rating of 8% from 145 reviews with an average rating of 3.2 / 10.
