The film opened in cinemas in the USA on October 28, 2011, and in Germany on November 10, 2011. The film had a production budget of 30 million US dollars, but only grossed just over half of its production costs worldwide. The location was the Babelsberg studio .

action

Anonymus is a political thriller set in the last years of Queen Elizabeth I's life . The film deals with the power struggle to succeed the Queen and reflects political unrest of the time such as the Essex Rebellion .

At the same time, the film addresses the question of who actually wrote the works of William Shakespeare . This question has long been discussed under the title of William Shakespeare authorship . Anonymous follows the so-called Oxford theory , which says that Edward de Vere is the actual author.

Ultimately, the film combines both parts of the Prince Tudor theory : it is assumed that Edward de Vere emerged from a love affair of the young Elizabeth and, unaware of his parentage, became the queen's lover and with her a son, Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton , fathered.

background

  • Screenwriter John Orloff wrote the script in the late 1990s. After Shakespeare in Love appeared in 1998, Orloff's script was on hold. Emmerich first came across the debate about the authorship of Shakespeare's works through the Orloff script.
  • The actors Derek Jacobi and Mark Rylance were already prominent representatives of various anti-Stratfordian theories in the authorship controversy surrounding William Shakespeare's work in Great Britain before the film was made . Rylance authored the 2007 play I am Shakespeare , which humorously explores the authorship issue, and is a trustee of the Shakespearean Authorship Trust.
  • Much of the shooting took place in the studios and outdoor areas of Studio Babelsberg in Potsdam , which also acted as co-producer of the film. The complete Globe / Rose Theater and a medieval village were created as a backdrop on the premises of the film studio.
  • The film music was recorded by the Babelsberg German Film Orchestra .

Reviews

"'Anonymus' is a big coat-and-sword cinema (mind you: made in Babelsberg), a political intrigue drama that plausibly resurrects London around 1600 in magnificent backdrops and with digital effects - such as the frozen Thames."

- Jörg Schöning on Spiegel Online

“Emmerich's 'dark' film is above all an extremely perfidious work. […] The most stupid and offensive is the portrayal of Shakespeare. If one is to claim that the author of the famous 37 plays is the Earl of Oxford or someone else, does one really have to portray the recognized author as a semi-educated show-off, drunkard and… murderer?
Where Anonymous is not uncomfortable and loud, it is boring and full of clichés. "

- David Walsh on wsws.org

“[Emmerich] relies on the so-called Prince Tudor theory, according to which Edward de Vere was not only the author of the famous works, but also an illegitimate son of Queen Elizabeth and her subsequent lover. Emmerich stages this variant, which is highly controversial even among Oxfordians, as a 'film in a play' and lets the plot of the drama 'Anonymus' merge into the splendidly decorated historical 'reality' after the prologue. During this flashback to the Elizabethan age, he also switches between three other time levels, which gives his very amusing, but ultimately quite simple robber pistol at least formal complexity. "

Awards

The costume designer Lisy Christl received an Oscar nomination in 2012 for her work on the film Anonymus . In the same year, the 2012 German Film Prize was awarded six awards in technical categories (best camera, best editing, best production design, costume design, make-up, sound design) and a nomination for best feature film.
