David Thewlis (real name David Wheeler ) (born March 20, 1963 in Blackpool ) is a British actor .

life and work

David Wheeler was born the second of three children. His parents Maureen and Alec Raymond Wheeler ran a toy store. As a teenager he began to be musically active and played lead guitar in two rock bands . At first he liked this and a career as an actor did not occur to him for the time being. Wheeler later attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London with Ewan McGregor and Naveen Andrews . There he came into contact with acting for the first time and joined the local theater group. Since the club already had a member named David Wheeler , he had to have a different surname and chose Thewlis , his mother's maiden name, which came to mind first.

Thewlis played in numerous supporting roles until he got his first leading role in the movie Nackt in 1993 and for this role was awarded the Actor Award of the Cannes International Film Festival in 1993 . In the same year he also played a disturbed killer in the crime series Hot Suspicion alongside Helen Mirren and Ciarán Hinds . In the following years he played various leading or supporting roles in several films, such as: B. Black Beauty , Restoration - Time of Sensuality (1995), Dragonheart (1996) and Seven Years in Tibet . Because of his involvement in this film, he was banned from entering the People's Republic of China for life, as was his fellow actor Brad Pitt and director Jean-Jacques Annaud . For his representations he won several prizes and was a. a. also nominated for a British Independent Film Award .

Originally, he was also supposed to take on the role of Professor Quirrell in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone , which ultimately went to Ian Hart . Instead he was hired for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban , in which he played Remus Lupine . He was also seen in this role in the sequels The Order of the Phoenix , The Half-Blood Prince and The Deathly Hallows . In 2011, in the Shakespeare thriller Anonymus by Roland Emmerich , he took on the role of advisor to Queen Elisabeth I. William Cecil . In 2005 he played the hospitaller in the monumental film Kingdom of Heaven and in 2008 the camp commandant Ralf in the drama The Boy in Striped Pajamas .

On September 7, 2007, his first book was published with the title The Late Hector Kipling .

In 1992 Thewlis married actress Sara Sugarman, but the marriage divorced in 1993. Further relationships with fellow actresses like Kate Hardie and Anna Friel followed . Thewlis has a daughter with the latter who was born in 2005.
