Content and presentation

Michael Stone is the author of a book on self-help and motivational training in customer service and is currently in Cincinnati to present his work at author readings . His perception of other people is disturbed: Everyone has the same face and the same (male) voice for him. Even when he calls his family, he only hears their voices distorted.

Later he calls on a past love he left behind without explanation. The suicide note she sent later is still in his head, but his thoughts about the author are blurred. The two spontaneously arrange to meet in the hotel bar. When Stone invites the former lover to his room, there is another break. In a drunk state, he ends up in a sex shop that he thought was a toy store .

Back in his room he hears a female voice from the hallway that does not fit into the monotony of his perception and then knocks on the doors of his neighboring room, looking for the owner of the voice. So he meets Lisa and her colleague Emma, who have come especially for his reading. Lisa has average looks, a scar on her face, and low self-esteem. Stone asks Lisa because of her voice and her individual appearance to his hotel room after an evening together. You have sex . The following night Stone plagued nightmares, and the next morning Lisa began to adjust his perception to the universal faces and voices. The lecture on his book becomes confused and full of self-doubt.

At the end of his journey, Stone returns home and does not recognize either her or the guests at the surprise party that his wife has organized. Here, too, all faces look the same to him, all voices sound the same. He is sitting alone on a staircase. Finally, he receives mail from Lisa, who wishes to see them again under different circumstances.
