Macbeth is a British drama directed by Justin Kurzel based on the tragedy of the same name by William Shakespeare . Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard play the leading roles as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
The film premiered on May 23, 2015 at the Cannes Film Festival , where it was also nominated for a Palme d' Or. The film was released in German cinemas on October 29, 2015.

Macbeth, initially a loyal vassal of King Duncan, encounters three witches in a battle who prophesy that he will become the next Thane of Cawdor and future King of Scotland. After the first part of the prophecy actually occurs, his ambitious wife presses for King Duncan to be killed and for the royal crown to be usurped while staying in the village of Macbeth. She even stunned the royal guards. Macbeth kills the king with a dagger in his tent. The king's son Malcolm comes into the tent a little later, sees what Macbeth has done and flees in fear. The next morning, Macduff discovers that the king has been murdered.
Because Malcolm has fled to England, Macbeth is proclaimed King of Scotland. Driven by feelings of guilt and the paranoia that someone might oust him from the throne , Macbeth develops into a cruel tyrant who does not shrink from murder in order to consolidate his power. He has his comrade-in-arms and confidante Banquo killed, only his son Fleance can escape the captors. At a banquet on the occasion of his coronation, Macbeth sees the spirit of Banquos among the assembled guests.
Macbeth orders the castle of his adversary Macduff to be besieged and his wife and her children to be judged. During his bloody reign, he and Lady Macbeth, who in the end takes her own life out of guilt, become more and more insane .
The tyranny of Macbeth provokes civil war. Malcolm has gathered an army in England and moves to the royal palace. Macduff sets fire to Birnam Forest. The last battle, in which Macbeth dies in a duel with Macduff, takes place in its billowing smoke. Fleance comes onto the battlefield and takes possession of the king's sword .

Filming
Filming began on February 6, 2014 and lasted seven weeks. The film was shot in Scotland and England. Filming took place at Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland and on the Isle of Skye, among others .
Awards
The ASC awarded the film the Spotlight Award .
At the BIFA 2015, the film was nominated for the categories of Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and Best Technology .
Justin Kurzel was nominated for the Palme d'Or for his directorial work at the Cannes Film Festival.
The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
