Justin Kurzel (born August 3, 1974 in Gawler , South Australia ) is an Australian film director and screenwriter .

Life

Kurzel was born in Gawler, South Australia in 1974. His brother is the musician and composer Jed Kurzel . Both grew up in Gawler.

Justin Kurzel began studying at NIDA in Sydney in the early 1990s .

First he shot music videos for the rock band The Mess Hall, founded by his brother . In 2005 Kurzel made his first short film Blue Tongue . In 2011 he made his directorial debut with The Murders of Snowtown , a film about the Snowtown murders . Kurzel also wrote the script for the film. For The Murders of Snowtown , he received the AACTA Award 2011 in the category Best Director .

Kurzel wrote the screenplay for the Boner McPharlin's Moll segment for the episodic film The Turning , which he also directed.

In 2015 Kurzel made a remake of the Shakespeare tragedy Macbeth , in which Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard played the leading roles. The film was screened at the 2015 Cannes International Film Festival in the competition for the Palme d'Or.

In December 2016, the film adaptation of the computer game Assassin's Creed was released , in which Michael Fassbender took on the lead role for the second time under Kurzel's direction.

Kurzel is married to actress Essie Davis . The marriage resulted in twin daughters. The family lives in London and Australia.
