The biography is based on the novel The True Story of Ned Kelly and His Gang by Peter Carey and tells of Australia's most famous bandit Ned Kelly , who together with his gang resisted the colonial authorities.

action

The bush thief Ned Kelly and his gang are on the run from the colonial authorities in Australia in the 1870s.

Biographical

The film is based on the novel True History of the Kelly Gang by Australian writer Peter Carey , published in 2000 by the University of Queensland Press. The German translation of the novel was published by Regina Rawlinson and Angela Schumitz under the title The true story of Ned Kelly and his gang in 2002 by Fischer Verlag. Carey lets the Australian outlaw Ned Kelly speak for himself in his novel . He is twelve years old when his father disappears. At fourteen he first came into conflict with the law. Horse theft, track sabotage, bank robberies and police shootings are on his list of crimes.

Ned Kelly the day before his execution

Kelly was a descendant of Irish Catholics who had been shipped to Australia as prisoners decades earlier. As a 14-year-old he was imprisoned for an attack on the Chinese pig farmer Ah Fook and his complicity with the mugger Harry Power. He was sentenced to forced labor several times in the following years . In February 1879 he attacked two banks in Euroa and Jerilderie , taking hostages in the process, but these were invariably spared. From the money he had stolen, he had armor made, which later became his trademark. Kelly penned a detailed public letter explaining his actions. The so-called Jerilderie Letter , in which Ned Kelly claims that English law knows no justice, considers the possibility of insurrection , not only in Australia but also in the United States and Ireland, against what he considered gross injustice . He also told the hostages the same thing.

He was sentenced to death by hanging after a trial presided over by Judge Barry for the murder of police officer Lonigan . The sentence was carried out on November 11, 1880 and his body was thrown in a mass grave . On January 20, 2013, 133 years after his execution, Ned Kelly was buried in a family grave in Greta, Victoria. The Glenrowan area of Victoria, where he lived with his family, is now known as Kellyland.

production

Directed by Justin Kurzel , the screenplay based on Carey's novel was written by Shaun Grant . The film is divided into three chapters. After the first chapter (“Boy”) the middle part (“Man”) tells from Kelly's perspective. The last chapter is titled "Monitor".

In November 2017, the cast with Russell Crowe , Nicholas Hoult and George MacKay became known, who took over the title role of Ned Kelly from the middle part. MacKay is already the second Briton to play the Australian Ned Kelly. Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones portrayed him in Kelly, the bandit of Tony Richardson in 1970 , while Clarissa Kaye played his wife. In the 1906 film The Story of the Kelly Gang by Charles Tait , Kelly was played by Frank Mills.

The shooting took place in Australia, in the summer of 2018 in the rural town of Wangaratta Rural City in Victoria .

The film music was composed by Jed Kurzel , the director's younger brother. The soundtrack, which comprises a total of 19 pieces of music, was released for download on January 10, 2020 by Lakeshore Records.

The film was shown for the first time on September 11, 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival after several press presentations in advance. In the run-up to the premiere, IFC Films secured the rights for North America. The film is due to hit cinemas in the United Kingdom on February 28, 2020. The cinema release in Australia took place on January 9, 2020.

reception

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 16.

So far, the film has won over 79 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics .

Felicitas Kleiner from the film service writes, especially in the showdown, Justin Kurzel once again celebrates all his lust for the unleashed staging, as it already shaped the battle scenes in his Macbeth version: "Kelly's last stand, in which he is captured and later executed, dissolves into sheer madness through a kind of stroboscopic effect. ”On the scene in which the policemen sift through the walls of the hut with their bullets and glaring light effects fall through the holes, Kleiner writes that these transformed the event into a kind of unreal disco of horror , into a macabre flash of flashes.
