description

The Ned Kelly armor made of steel. It was worn by the Australian robber and folk hero Ned Kelly (* June 1854 or 1855, † November 11, 1880) in a robbery. It is believed that the steel used to make the Kelly Gang's armor came from the material of stolen plows . A total of four of this armor were made to protect the members of the gang from police bullets . The armor consists of a helmet , breast armor , back armor, epaulettes and thigh and genital protection attached to the breast armor . There were differences in the different armor. Various parts, such as genital protection, were not present on all armor. Ned Kelly's armor was probably the only one that was padded and he wore a padded skull cap under the helmet to relieve the pressure on the helmet. The helmets sit on the shoulders and the rest of the armor was attached to the body with leather straps . Leg protection was not provided. The lack of this protection resulted in Ned Kelly being hit in the legs and falling on his last stand with the police in Glenrowan. In total, the armor weighed around 40 kg. After Kelly's arrest and subsequent execution by hanging, the armor ended up in the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne , where it can still be seen today. In 2002 several pieces of armor were found and added again.
