The State Library of Victoria in Melbourne is the central library of the State of Victoria in Australia . It was built in Victorian style from 1854 and is in the Victorian Heritage Register (VHR number H1497). It is located in Melbourne's northern business center.

The library, which had been open to the public since 1856 with 3846 books at the time, had a holdings of over 2 million books and 16,000 magazines in 2013. The special features of the collection include the diaries of the city's founders John Batman and John Pascoe Fawkner , the writings ( folios ) of Captain James Cook and the original armor of Ned Kelly from the 19th century .
