Léon Maier (born April 1, 1952 in Ensisheim ) is a former French football player .
Career
Originally from Alsace , Maier was accepted into the youth team of FC Sochaux towards the end of the 1960s . In 1970, at the age of 18, he moved up to the squad of the first team and presented himself in a total of twelve first division games in a positive way, so that those responsible in Sochaux decided to rely on the young Maier for the position of the winger. Because of this, he advanced to become a regular player in his second season as a professional at only 19 years of age. As a result, he was not only allowed to play in the league, but also in the French U-21 team. Later he also played for the French B national team. He and his team made it into the UEFA Cup twice , even if it failed early.
Despite his success in the first years of his career, Maier played relatively inconsistent and in the fall of 1976 after six years in Sochaux decided to switch to league rivals Stade Rennes . At Rennes he had to experience the first descent of his career at the end of the season, but did not go to the second division and returned after nine months to his ex-club from Sochaux, but without regaining his regular place. Instead, he took on the role of a "noble joker" and was thus a substitute player who was substituted on in almost every game. So he came to 47 missions in two years, but then decided to leave Sochaux for good when he signed with the second division club FC Toulouse in 1979 . In the southern French metropolis, Maier was one of the top performers in his team, which was getting closer and closer to promotion to the first division and made the leap in 1982. He spent another year in the first division before ending his professional career in 1983 at the age of 31.
