Erwin M (aria) Ruprechtsberger (born March 22, 1952 in Linz ) is an Austrian archaeologist and scholar of antiquity, who made a special contribution to researching the city of Linz and the Upper Austrian central area. In the area of ​​prehistory, Ruprechtsberger and Otto H. Urban headed the project “Prehistoric Settlements in Greater Linz” from 1989 onwards, in the course of which the discovery of the now well-known “Celtic Treasure of Linz” was successful. The priority program “Stone Age” followed from 2005-2016 which results in several exhibitions ( "mystery of the stone age between the Danube and the Alps", Linz-Regensburg 2011 last) and were incorporated into a series of monographs. Erwin M. Ruprechtsberger studied classical antiquity, classical philology as well as Byzantine and Christian archeology at the universities of Vienna and Salzburg . He received his doctorate in 1975 with a dissertation on the subject of The Terra Sigillata of the Enns Museum . In 1978 he was appointed city archaeologist of Linz, where from 1990 he had also held the position of deputy director of the Linz City Museum (Nordico) . In 1986 Ruprechtsberger completed his habilitation with the thesis Contributions to Provincial Roman and Late Antique Archeology for Roman Antiquity and Provincial Roman Archeology . Since then he has taught at the University of Salzburg as a lecturer, from 1995 to 2006 as associate professor; from 2006 to 2016 he lectured as a visiting professor at the University of Graz. In 2017 Ruprechtsberger retired.

Ruprechtsberger has published well over 500 publications to date, more than 50 of which are monographic, often in the area of ​​museum publications. He carried out excavations in the greater Linz area, in Burgundy under the direction of Otto H. Urban and in the Middle East . Mention should be made of his research in Baalbek (Lebanon), in Palmyra and on Mount Hermon (Syria), where he uncovered the summit sanctuary at an altitude of 2,814 meters with the support and aegis of the Austrian UN contingent in Djolan in Syria. Many surveys took him to the Sahara of North Africa and the Maghreb states. In Tobruk (Libya) he devoted himself to the topographical development of the Roman fort of Antipyrgos and the uncovering of a corner and intermediate tower. In addition, he has the merit of opening up the ancient Berber people of the Garamanten in Libya to the German-speaking area and making it known.
