Michael Fassbender (born April 2, 1977 in Heidelberg , Baden-Württemberg ) is a German - Irish actor and film producer .

life and career

Fassbender was born to a German father and an Irish mother in Heidelberg and grew up in Killarney in southwest Ireland from the age of two .

He had his first major role in 2001 in the television series Band of Brothers . Over the next four years, Fassbender starred in various English television productions, including a recurring guest role in Murphy's Law . In 2004 and 2005 he acted the fallen angel Azazeal in the television series Hex and the following year he took on the role of Stelios in the comic book adaptation 300 .

In 2008 Fassbender brought his first leading role in Steve McQueen's drama Hunger, a nomination for the European Film Awards 2008 for Best Actor . He was even more famous for a role in Quentin Tarantino's film Inglourious Basterds . 2010 followed leading and important supporting roles in films such as Jonah Hex , Jane Eyre and X-Men: First Decision .

His representation of sex addicts in Steve McQueen's Shame brought to him in 2011 numerous awards, including the Best Actor Award of the 68th International Film Festival of Venice , the British Independent Film Award , the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award , the London Film Critics' Circle Film Award and nominations for the Golden Globe Award , the BAFTA Award and the European Film Prize . In 2012 he played the android David in Ridley Scott's science fiction film Prometheus - Dark Characters .

For his role in the British movie 12 Years a Slave by Steve McQueen, Fassbender was nominated for an Oscar in 2014 in the category Best Actor in a Supporting Role, which however went to Jared Leto . This was followed by another collaboration with Ridley Scott for the thriller The Counselor . In 2014 he took over the role of the mutant Magneto in the comic book adaptation X-Men: Future is Past .

In 2015 Fassbender took on the role of Macbeth in the real-life version of William Shakespeare's tragedy of the same name . In the same year he took on the title role in the biography of Apple founder Steve Jobs and was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in the category of Best Actor . Fassbender played the main role of Callum Lynch in the real-life version of the computer game Assassin's Creed , which was released in December 2016 . In 2017, Tomas Alfredson's film adaptation of the novel Snowman by Jo Nesbø , in which Fassbender played the role of Harry Hole, was published.

His mother tongue is English, he also speaks German, but with a strong English accent. He is therefore dubbed in German-language films, mostly by Norman Matt .

He has been married to the Swedish actress Alicia Vikander since October 2017 , whom he met at the end of 2014 while filming The Light Between Oceans .
