The 25th European Film Awards ceremony took place on December 1st, 2012 in Valletta , Malta . After last year the TV gala in Berlin had taken place, it was for the first time at the European awarded island nation and found at the same time geographically as far south as never before held. The award for best film was Michael Haneke's Love , who was able to convert four of his six nominations into victories.
The award gala was held in the Mediterranean Conference Center at the port of Valletta. The German Anke Engelke took over the moderation for the fourth time . In addition to around 1000 European filmmakers, the German Minister of State for Culture Bernd Neumann , the Austrian Minister for Art and Culture, Claudia Schmied , and the Ministers of Culture Meli Kraniqi (Kosovo) and Zaneta Jaunzeme-Grende (Latvia) were expected.
British actress Helen Mirren , Italian director and screenwriter Bernardo Bertolucci and Swedish film producer Helena Danielsson have already been selected as winners . Mirren, who received the Actor Award in 2007 for her performance in The Queen, was awarded the prize in the category Best European Performance in World Cinema by the European Film Academy (EFA) at the end of September 2012 . In early October, Bertolucci was announced as the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award. The filmmaker received a special award for his Oscar-winning work The Last Emperor at the first European Film Award in 1988 and was last nominated for the Audience Director's Award in 2004 for The Dreamers . Danielsson was announced in mid-November as the winner of the annual Prix EURIMAGES, which honors the work of European co-producers through EURIMAGES . Danielsson founded the production company Hepp Film in 2003 and also works for Tre Vänner Produktion AB. With her participation, films such as the drama Bessere Zeiten or the action thriller Easy Money (2011) were made.
As in the previous year, the award ceremony was offered as a live stream over the Internet. Summaries of the gala will be broadcast in German-speaking countries by arte (Germany, December 2nd) and ORF (Austria, December 4th).
