content
A group of inmates performed William Shakespeare's drama Julius Caesar in front of an audience at Rebibbia prison . The film begins with the last scenes of the play when Brutus asks his comrades for help in his suicide. Now we look back at the beginning of the rehearsals 6 months earlier. The middle part of the film shows the development of the performance in black and white. Only when the premiere begins is the rest of the film colored again. As if to remind you that you could also show color, a landscape picture on a cell wall changes color for a few seconds. The color scheme of the Taviani brothers illustrates the different dramaturgical levels of the film. The finished staging is shown in color. Black and white of everyday life in prison and the relationships between the roles and the convicts' real life and past.
The theater director Fabio Cavalli portrays himself in the film as he recruits a troop of 12 men from the prisoners: all “heavy boys” with one exception: the actor who played Brutus was released six years earlier and has since developed into a professional actor . Allegedly the theater hall is being restored, which is why the rehearsals take place in the usual places of the prison. As a result, the buildings, courtyards and corridors of the prison become the place of the developing action. The inmates also rehearse in their cells and reflect on the content of the texts with their own lives.
Reviews
“But the artful filmmaking of the Taviani brothers wouldn't work on its own if the inmates weren't born actors. Above all, Salvatore Striano, who plays Brutus, is a natural with a very intense charisma and facial expressions. "
“Here, too, the focus is on people and their rights, their insights, errors, their self-criticism, and not the lofty ideological and moral principles - Shakespeare and the Tavianis agree on this. This is what makes the film so strong and persuasive in this unusual location with its unusual actors. That is the humane project of the Tavianis, which they will probably pursue until their very last film. "
