Matthias Schoenaerts
Matthias Schoenaerts (born December 8, 1977 in Antwerp ) is a Belgian actor .
life and career
Matthias Schoenaerts is the son of the actor Julien Schoenaerts . He studied at the Drama Academy in Antwerp. He made his film debut at the age of 15 in the Oscar-nominated film “Daens” by the Flemish film director Stijn Coninx . After graduating, he played in various TV series and film productions. In 2003 he was named "Shooting Star" by the European Film Promotion at the Berlinale . In 2008 he starred in the role of Filip in Loft, directed by Erik Van Looy, the most successful Belgian film to date.
In 2011, he was cast as the main character in Bullhead , a film by Belgian director Michaël R. Roskam that received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film . Schoenaerts won several awards for his role, including the Belgian Magritte Prize , the Next Wave Award in Austin and the FIPRESCI Award for Best Actor at the Palm Springs International Film Festival . In its reasoning, the jury spoke of an “excellent portrait of an innocent, sensitive man who is trapped in a devastating body”. One year later, in 2012, he took on the male lead in The Taste of Rust and Bones by Jacques Audiard alongside the French Oscar winner Marion Cotillard . His portrayal of Ali earned him the César for best young actor in 2013 . Schoenaerts also starred in the Belgian short film Death of a Shadow by director Tom Van Avermaet. In 2013 this film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Short Film.
In December 2014, a remake of Loft was released in German-speaking cinemas, in which he again played the role of Filip. In 2015 he was seen at the side of Carey Mulligan in On the green edge of the world by director Thomas Vinterberg . The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Thomas Hardy . In addition to his mother tongue, he is fluent in English and French. Schoenaerts lives in Antwerp.
