action

Addie Moore and Louis Waters are neighbors in a small Colorado town. Both live alone, the children have long been out of the house and their respective partners died years ago. Although the two 70-year-olds have lived on the same street for decades, they know little about each other. One evening Addie, who feels very lonely and sleeps poorly, especially at night, visits her neighbor and makes him an unusual proposal. She asks Louis to spend the nights with her in a purely platonic way, in order to overcome loneliness together. Although Louis initially hesitates to accept the proposal, he finally agrees and begins to spend the evenings and nights with Addie.

Through their nightly conversations about their life and their past, Louis and Addie soon develop a close bond. Addie tells of the death of her eleven-year-old daughter and its consequences for their marriage. Louis reveals an affair that nearly destroyed his marriage.

Louis and Addie spend the summer with Jamie, Addie's 7-year-old grandson, whose mother recently left the family. Louis quickly takes Jamie to his heart. He builds an old model train for the boy and adopts a dog from the animal shelter. The three of Louis, Addie and Jamie go on a camping holiday. When Gene, Jamie's father, picks up his son at the end of the summer, he confronts his mother about her relationship with Louis. Because of Louis' previous affairs, he disapproves of his mother's relationship with her neighbor. However, Addie refuses to end the relationship.

Some time later, Addie had to go to the hospital after falling. Gene tries to convince Addie to move in with him, but she refuses. Shortly thereafter, however, Addie receives a desperate phone call in the middle of the night from Jamie, who is home alone. Louis and Addie go to see him immediately. Gene later returns completely drunk and confronts her with having always known that his mother secretly blames him for his sister's death. Addie then changes her mind. She sells her house and moves in with Gene and Jamie. She maintains her relationship with Louis by making phone calls in the evenings before bed.

reception

Susan Vahabzadeh of the Süddeutsche Zeitung thinks the film is “neither a spectacle nor a cinematic experiment, but simply a beautifully told story that is sometimes funny and sometimes touching without ever being sentimental”. Furthermore, the film looks like this and with its "soft country music and [its] autumnal earth tones [...] it sounds like the last film before that Redford and Fonda made together, The Electric Rider (1979). "So there is" a little nostalgia "about the film.
