Phyllis Somerville (born December 12, 1943 in Iowa City , Iowa , † July 16, 2020 in New York City , New York ) was an American actress .

Life

After graduating from the University of Northern Iowa , Somerville began her theater career and performed the musical Over Here! First seen on Broadway in 1974 . She was discovered by television in the early 1980s. She had her first role in a movie in 1981 in Arthur - No Child of Sadness at the side of Liza Minnelli .

Somerville's best-known cinema roles include May McGorvey , mother of a sex criminal , in Todd Field's Little Children (2005) opposite Kate Winslet and Patrick Wilson, and the grandmother of Cate Blanchett's character in David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008). She is known to a wide audience through the role of Marlene in the television series The Big C , which she played between 2010 and 2013. She played a recurring supporting role as Lady Ray in the series Outsiders in 2016 and 2017 . She was last seen on Broadway as Mrs. Dubose in a theatrical version of Who disturbs the nightingale until autumn 2019 .
