The Blacklist is an American television series that premiered on NBC on September 23, 2013 . James Spader plays the protagonist of the series, a felon cooperating with the FBI .

The sixth season, comprising 22 episodes, was broadcast on NBC from January 3 to May 17, 2019, while the last season in German-speaking countries has been shown by RTL Crime from February 13 to July 10, 2018 .

On March 11, 2019, it was announced that NBC had commissioned a seventh season, which has been on Netflix since June 26, 2020. Unlike all other seasons, it does not consist of 22 episodes, but has been shortened to 19. The reason for this is the corona virus, which led to the shooting being stopped. The season finale with the title The Kazanjian Brothers , which was only partially completed at this point in time , was also completed by animation since filming was no longer possible.

On February 20, 2020, NBC announced that the series would have an eighth season.

action

The main plot of each episode deals with the apprehension of criminals from Raymond "Red" Reddington's "Blacklist" . Reddington is a former government agent and now the most wanted felon in the world. In return for extraditing the criminals, Reddington demands cooperation with FBI agent Elizabeth "Liz" Keen. At the same time, the past of Reddington and Liz is illuminated in subplots and how their fates are linked.

season 1

Raymond "Red" Reddington is a former officer in the Office of Naval Intelligence and one of the most wanted criminals in the United States. At the beginning of the series, he faces the FBI in Washington, DC . However, he only wants to speak to the FBI agent Elizabeth "Liz" Keen and offers to help in the search for criminals and terrorists. Liz becomes part of a secret FBI task force led by Assistant Director Harold Cooper. Together she works on Reddington's cases with the help of FBI Special Agent Donald Ressler, the CIA agent Meera Malik, and IT specialist Aram Mojtabai. Reddington, in turn, calls on his bodyguards Dembe Zuma and Luli Zeng for personal protection.

In the course of their first case together, Liz's husband Tom Keen is badly wounded in their living room. While Liz was cleaning the carpet, she found a box hidden in the floor containing a gun, money and several fake IDs for her husband. The pistol was used in a murder in a Boston hotel. A file shows Tom in front of the hotel entrance on the day of the murder. Before Liz can confront Tom with the new facts, he finds the box in the ground. He is shocked and justifies his presence in Boston with an interview that he conducted there. The economic terrorist Gina Zanetakos also exonerates Tom.

When there are indications of an attack on Red, Ressler takes him into protective custody. Shortly afterwards, the facility is stormed by Red's former companion Anslo Garrick and Reddington is kidnapped by him. After the attack, the team is certain that they have a "mole" in their own ranks. Diane Fowler then declared the task force disbanded. Meanwhile, it is learned that the attack was ordered by Alan Fitch, Assistant Director of National Intelligence . Reddington manages to escape.

Fowler recalls the task force, but Reddington refuses to return until the mole is found. The FBI orders an internal investigation. Reddington is conducting its own research in parallel. Liz and Tom's marriage is getting more and more difficult because Liz no longer wants to adopt a child as planned and Tom meets another woman named Jolene. Reddington finds a clue that Diane Fowler supported Garrick. He shoots Fowler and has the scene of "Mr. Kaplan "clean. Jolene and Tom meet in an abandoned industrial area that Tom uses as secret quarters. When Reddington tries to kidnap Jolene, Tom kills her.

Liz assigns Aram to trace Jolene's last call that came from Tom's hiding place. She drives there, but Tom can destroy evidence and escape undetected. He informs his employer that he has been blown and is captured by the Pavlovich brothers. Liz starts torturing him; eventually he can escape. Reddington meanwhile pursues his goal: to find his opponent and attacker “Berlin”. Tom later takes Liz hostage, but she manages to shoot him down. Tom apologizes to her and whispers something in her ear before passing out.

season 2

In the second season, Red's personal life, his family and his past life are discussed in more detail. Liz has to orientate herself after her failed marriage. First, Red is looking for the people who were commissioned by Berlin to kill him. He comes across the name Lord Baltimore , who is now next on his blacklist . The FBI is also looking for Berlin and its allies. In the meantime, Berlin kidnaps Naomi, Red's ex-wife, and sends Red a package with a cell phone and a severed finger. Red dials a number and Berlin replies: “I will do the same to your wife as you did to my daughter. I'll send them back, piece by piece. "

In Warsaw, a bank is attacked by several men. Liz and Ressler take the case. In the process, Ressler discovers a surveillance camera outside the bank. It can be seen that only 5 men enter the bank, but 6 people leave it, including a woman. The Polish police storm an apartment in which the criminals and also the kidnapped bank employee are staying. The clerk gives Ressler a slip of paper with an account number. Red arranges a meeting with Berlin. He tells him about a common enemy who is said to have killed his daughter too. He also says that he has all his money and asks Naomi to exchange it. The exchange takes place. At the post office, the bank clerk gives all the codes to the FBI. Mossad agent Samar Navabi joins the FBI task force. Liz keeps Tom on a ship, through him she gains useful information for the fight against Berlin. However, she is still undecided what to do with him as soon as she no longer needs any information. Tom kills the harbor master, who discovered the prisoner's hiding place to protect Liz.

Red and Berlin are looking for their mutual opponent The Decembrist . This has led Berlin to believe that Red killed his daughter. In truth, she is still alive and should be protected from her father. In doing so, Berlin comes across a powerful Russian minister. After Red and Berlin kill him together, the trail continues to the US Senator Alan Fitch. Red shares a common past with this. He asks Berlin to stay out of it. But this kidnaps Fitch and straps a bomb construction around his neck. The FBI finds the kidnapped man but cannot help him in time. Before he dies, he gives Red a code for a safe in St. Petersburg. Red now takes revenge on Berlin and kills him after they have emptied a bottle of vodka together.

Red's new adversary, Braxton, is after The Fulcrum , a file containing information about illegal operations by the American intelligence apparatus. Red pretends to be in possession of this item. Meanwhile, Liz is haunted by memories of the night with the fire. However, the facts have been replaced by more positive memories and so Fulcrum's hiding place remains hidden. A doctor who was blackmailed by Braxton treats Liz with medication to transport her into the past under hypnosis. The FBI finds out where Liz is and can rescue her. Red kills Braxton in time . Liz now remembers that the Fulcrum is hidden in a cuddly toy and thus comes into possession of it. A police officer notices the harbor master's disappearance. He starts investigations that lead Liz to testify in court. Red and Ressler go in search of Tom to exonerate Liz in court. Tom returns to America and confesses to the murder of the harbor master. Liz is not charged.

Red is shot by a sniper. Tom Connolly is behind the assassination. Red is taken to a warehouse that is converted into an operating room. The FBI moves in to protect Red. A mole reveals Red's whereabouts. A killer disguised as an FBI agent is located by Mr. Kaplan and eliminated. Karakurt is in the United States and is planning attacks for the Cabal organization. As the carrier of a supervirus, Liz becomes an involuntary perpetrator. She is arrested for the fatal attack on the senator. Cooper teams up with Red and manages to get Liz out of jail. Connolly admits that he wanted to crush the entire task force and get Red on the electric chair. Then Liz shoots Connolly. This brings back memories: Liz sees herself as a little girl who shoots her father on the night of the fire. Cooper is suspected of being involved in Connolly's murder and Ressler becomes the new head of the task force.

season 3

The third season starts with Liz and Red going to the so-called "Troll Farmer" to get help from him. At the same time, Cooper is interrogated by Ressler. After Liz and Red are separated, they meet again at a diner, where Ressler tracks them down. In addition, Cooper is given a forced leave of absence. Now Liz and Red are given leverage against the Cabal by a high-ranking ecoterrorist. In order to track down the Cabal, Red looks for the so-called "Djinn", which makes revenge fantasies come true. Liz almost dies in an assassination attempt. Red is looking for the person who put a bounty on Liz. In addition, Ressler should now cooperate with the CIA. Now Liz and Red encounter a withdrawn billionaire who wants to kidnap the smartest people in the world to save humanity from extinction.

The task force is now after an Iranian terrorist named "Zal Bin Hasaan" who kills Mossad agents and kidnapped Israeli scientists. Samar learns what connection she has with Hasaan. Liz and Red are still on the run. So that Liz can freshen up, they stop at a gas station. When Liz finishes, she can't find Red anymore. He is kidnapped by highwaymen called "The Kings of the Road" and taken hostage. At the same time, Cooper and Tom try to collect evidence to exonerate Liz. When Red is handed over to Liz, the FBI takes them by surprise. Liz tries to escape, but Ressler catches her. She is taken into custody to be brought before the judge.

The Cabal tries to prevent Liz from reaching the courthouse. Red secretly meets with the task force to outsmart the Cabal and save Liz. Suddenly a man appears who claims to be Reddington. The task force briefly doubts Red's identity. At a meeting of the world's biggest criminals, Red is said to be exposed as an informant, but things turn out differently.

A murder appears in the newspaper, which is said to have been carried out by an association from the Middle Ages called "Femgericht". These kill their victims with molten metal. Together with the task force, Red and Liz want to stop a negotiator who unites rivals. Red and Liz are on the trail of a kidnapper named “Lady Ambrosia” who kidnaps physically handicapped children who no one wants to have. Now a serial killer named "Drexel", who is displaying his victims on the Internet, kills the founder of a start-up Internet company. By murdering an employee of the US State Department, Red and Liz track down the “caretaker” who manages the secrets of criminals.

While Liz and Tom prepare for their wedding, Solomon escapes the US Marshals. The wedding of Liz and Tom is stormed by mercenaries. Liz is in mortal danger. The entire task force is shaken with grief and pain when Liz dies of complications following the birth of her child.

Red travels to recover from grief. He hallucinates that he has to save a beautiful woman from persecutors. The task force discovered a network that controls a satellite network for espionage. He finds the woman named "Susan" who deals with Liz's killers. Red and the task force realize that the only way to catch Alexander Kirk, who is responsible for recent events, is through criminal means. You team up with Susan.

Alexander Kirk thinks he's Liz's father. Liz is still alive and was taken to an island by Mr. Kaplan. Tom now also goes to the island with her daughter. What neither of them suspect is that Kirk has already found Liz and her daughter Agnes. Red blames Mr. Kaplan. Together with the task force he wants to save Liz and Agnes.

Season 4

Liz, Tom and Agnes are held separately by Alexander Kirk. This was the husband of Katarina, Liz's mother, and therefore assumed to be Liz's father. He suffers from a hereditary disease from which he will die in the foreseeable future, and only a donation from a compatible relative could save him, which is why he has all hopes in Liz. Liz continues to be confronted with her past and finally wants to help her father.

Eventually it turns out that Kirk is not her birth father, which drives him increasingly crazy. Red finally saves Liz and confesses to Kirk that he is her birth father.

Red cannot forgive Mr. Kaplan for betraying him and he ends up shooting her as punishment for faking Liz's death. Since Kaplan had survived a shot in the head with a lot of luck in the past, a metal reinforcement was inserted into her skull, which now saves her life. In her anger at Red, she tries to completely destroy his criminal network. Since she was one of his closest confidants and Red thinks her dead, she is increasingly successful at this.

In retrospect, we learn that Mr. Kaplan was once Liz's nanny and also had a very close relationship with Katarina. She joined the Reddington criminal network only to protect Liz, although she initially loathed Red and blamed him for the messy situation.

Finally, Red and Mr. Kaplan confront. Red offers to spare her life if she withdraws, but Kaplan refuses, determined to split Red and Liz in two. She hides a suitcase that, in the event of her death, will be handed over to a hitherto unknown person and that is said to contain a secret that Liz and Red will finally fall apart. She asks Red to finally kill her to trigger the handover of the suitcase, but then suicides when Red refuses.

Liz eventually learns through a paternity test initiated by Cooper that Red is her father.

Season 5

Raymond "Red" Reddington is broke, his reputation is damaged. He begins to rebuild his empire.

Mr. Kaplan arranged for a suitcase full of bones to be delivered to Liz. Tom takes the suitcase. He's trying to find out whose leftover it is. A DNA test provides information. However, this calls for people who also want to get the suitcase. Red steps in, saves Tom and takes the suitcase. He absolutely wants to prevent Liz from being informed of its contents.

Tom outwits Red and flees with the suitcase. Liz and Tom are ambushed and seriously injured in their apartment. Red comes to the rescue at the last second.

Liz and Tom are in mortal danger. Ten months later, Liz woke up from a coma to learn that Tom had succumbed to his injuries.

Liz withdraws to Alaska, Agnes stays with Tom's mother. Red respects Liz's decisions. After an incident Liz goes back to Washington D. C . She wants to avenge Tom's murder.

Red informs Liz that the people who killed Tom belong to the Nash Syndicate. She follows her own tracks. She goes to Navarro, who belongs to the Syndicate; there is a fight, he dies. Liz escapes. The policeman in charge of the investigation is the same as in Tom's case.

reception

The television series was rated on Metacritic with a Metascore of 74/100 based on 31 reviews.

Gian-Philip Andreas from wunschliste.de wrote “ The Blacklist [is] not a completely unsuccessful television series. Much succeeds, even beyond the charismatic main character. The pilot film directed by Joe Carnahan ( The Gray - Unter Wölfen ), for example, has a good pace and shines with surprisingly nasty moments of shock and a formidable action choreography in the middle section that almost sweeps the viewer out of their armchairs; even later, the episodes always score with cleverly gathered sequences and internal tension arcs. But this contrasts with the slack figure drawing and a fireworks of crime fiction clichés from last-second countdowns and crazy computer tinkerers ”.

Juliane Frisse, columnist at the youth channel Puls des Bavarian Broadcasting , commented on the series as follows: “If you don't care whether the plot of a thriller series is reasonably plausible or not, you could still feel entertained by The Blacklist . Because the series is excitingly staged despite thriller clichés like ticking time bombs and the like and Red is wonderfully played by James Spader ( Boston Legal ) ”.

Stefan Kuzmany from Spiegel Online wrote about the free TV premiere of the series before Ich bin ein Star - Get me out of here! took place, “With 'The Blacklist' RTL viewers can dawn towards the jungle camp without much effort. The stupid face of the hapless FBI investigator alone is worth seeing. "

Axel Schmitt from Serienjunkies.de explains that the series “ wants to be a bit homeland and a bit 24 at the same time ”, but only takes up “the implausible, less pleasant elements” of both. He also writes that " The Blacklist is a typical Schema-F-Procedurals of the large networks" and one can feel entertained accordingly. Of the actors, he found "so far only the portrayal of James Spader , who has apparently decided to caricature his character himself".

The Focus columnist Beate Stroebel called the television series as "a mehrbödiges Thrill construct arcade action along the lines of Homeland and 24 " and believes that "the action [...] American quality work, the plot applied routinely and every single Cliffhanger cleverly chosen ”and“ heart and brain are largely in balance, even if one looks into the eyes for a long time and is psychologized. Basically a good choice for deep TV moments is James Spader, who invited us to sex, lies and video back in 1989 when he was still red haired . "
