Jane Alexander
Jane Alexander (born Jane Quigley ; born October 28, 1939 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American actress .
Life
Jane Alexander began her acting training in 1966 with her work at the theater in Washington, DC In 1969 she made her Broadway debut in the boxer drama The Great White Hope , for which she was awarded a Tony Award . She also played the role of Eleanor Backman a year later on the side of James Earl Jones in the film adaptation of Martin Ritt , for which she received her first Oscar nomination . Later in her career, she was nominated three more times for Oscar and received six other Tony Award nominations.
Alexander can be seen in both television and cinema productions and her filmography includes more than 60 works.
In 1993 she was appointed director of the National Endowment for the Arts by US President Bill Clinton , which she remained until 1997.
In 1994 Alexander was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame . In 1999 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . The actress was married twice: from 1962 until the divorce in 1974 with Robert Alexander, then from 1975 until his death in 2017 with the theater producer Edwin Sherin . From her first marriage she has the son Jace Alexander , who also became an actor.
