action
United States , 1939–1945: The young Homer Wells grew up with the respected physician Dr. Wilbur Larch after his mother gave birth to him at Larch's Clinic and St. Cloud's Orphanage. He is adopted twice but keeps returning to St. Cloud's until he's too old to be adopted . Dr. Larch develops a kind of father-son relationship with Homer. As he gets older, Dr. Larch him to the doctor. The clinic gives birth to women who have become pregnant unintentionally. Dr. But Larch also performs abortions , which is illegal at the time. Homer becomes a good doctor and gynecologist but refuses to perform abortions on moral grounds.
One day, the pretty Candy and her boyfriend Wally come to the clinic to have an abortion. The intelligent but inexperienced Homer seizes the opportunity to leave the orphanage and drives the two of them to the coast. There he stayed with Wally's family, where he was the only white man among the otherwise black apple pickers to earn money. He gets on well with Wally, but he soon leaves the plantation to fight as a pilot in World War II . While Wally is away, Candy and Homer get closer.
Homer is happy and ignores the letters in which Dr. Larch asks to come back to the orphanage. The doctor is to be replaced because of his "non-Christian" attitude. Dr. Larch forges diplomas for Homer and wants Homer to be hired as a doctor. But Homer refuses to leave his new home and Candy. He doesn't want to have anything to do with his past anymore and hides his medical training from the other apple pickers.
Eventually he is confronted with his medical training and the question of abortions when the apple picker Rose becomes pregnant. When Homer learns that her own father has made her pregnant, he is ready to help and performs the abortion. When she leaves the plantation one evening, she injures her father with a knife. The father claims that he stabbed himself with the knife because he could not bear his daughter leaving him and dies shortly afterwards.
After Homer learns that Wally will return from the war paralyzed and that Dr. Larch has died, he separates from Candy and goes back to the orphanage to take over the management as a doctor. As Dr. Larch ends the bedtime stories: Sleep well, you Princes of Maine, you Kings of New England .
background

“A film adaptation of the novel by John Irving, which purifies the original in favor of an atmospherically dense, evocative story of initiation. Although the discourse on the determinants of human existence, which is much more subtly differentiated in the template, is simplified (especially in the occasionally somewhat sentimental glorification of the problem of abortion), the ambivalence of good and bad is pointedly symbolized as two sides of the same coin. Excellent staged and played, brilliantly photographed. "
“You would never have thought of Michael Caine (as Larch) or Tobey Maguire (as Homer) while reading - and now you cannot imagine anyone else in these roles. You and the whole film convey the essence of the novel. Conclusion: Almost as great as the book. "
“The literary adaptation is conventional in its staging and old-fashioned in its narrative - and that's a good thing. The viewer has time to concentrate on everything: nostalgic images, ostensibly simple-minded minds, meager living conditions and small feelings that are great because they are completely free of pathetic sweetness. "
