Kate Nelligan

Kate Nelligan (born Patricia Colleen Nelligan in London , Ontario , March 16, 1950 ) is a Canadian actress .

Life and accomplishments

Nelligan graduated from London South Secondary School in London, Ontario, then studied at the University of Toronto , but did not graduate there. Instead, she moved to London's Central School of Speech and Drama . She made her theater debut in 1973, and shortly thereafter played her first major role in a television series , The Onedin Line . In the television series Great Performances , she played in the episode The Arcata Promise (1970) alongside Anthony Hopkins . She was nominated for a BAFTA Award in 1980 for her role in the television film Measure for Measure (1979) based on a play by William Shakespeare . In the horror film Dracula '79 (1979) she appeared alongside Frank Langella , Laurence Olivier and Donald Pleasence .

She played the leading role in the British mini-television series Thérèse Raquin (1980), for which she was nominated for the 1981 BAFTA television award. In 1983 she moved to New York City , where she appeared in numerous plays. Between 1983 and 1989 she was nominated four times for the Tony Award .

Nelligan starred in the drama One Morning in May (1983), as well as in the 1985 war drama Eleni , in which Nelligan played alongside John Malkovich and Linda Hunt . For her leading role in the film The White Room (1990) she was nominated for the Genie Award in 1991 .

In the film drama Frankie & Johnny (1991) Nelligan starred alongside Michelle Pfeiffer , Al Pacino and Hector Elizondo . For this role she won the National Board of Review Award in 1991 and the BAFTA Award in 1992. She was nominated for an Oscar in 1992 for her role in the drama Lord of the Tides (1991) with Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte . She was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1992 for her guest appearance on the television series Avonlea - The Girl from Town and won the Gemini Award in 1993 . She was nominated for the Gemini Award in 1996 for her role in the television film Der Mutter entrissen (1994). She received further nominations for this award in 2001 for her leading role in the television film Blessed Stranger: After Flight 111 (2000) and in 2004 for her leading role in the mini-television series Human Cargo (2004). In 1996 she won the Genie Award for her supporting role in the film drama The End of All Dreams (1995) .

Nelligan was temporarily married to the composer Robert Reale and has one son. She lives in Manhattan .
