The Onedin line is the title of a British television series from the 1970s. It tells the story of the sailing ship captain and later ship owner James Onedin and his family in England in the late 19th century. It ran from 1972 on in the evening program of ARD and ORF . The exterior scenes of the first season were shot largely in and in front of Dartmouth , the interior scenes entirely in the studio.
A BBC series
The Onedin line was considered one of the most successful BBC productions of the 1970s and was first broadcast in Germany on October 25, 1972 in the regional program of Bavarian Radio. The idea and the novel came from Cyril Abraham, who had previously written short stories and skits for various radio stations.
It tells the story of the family of the sailing ship captain James Onedin (played by Peter Gilmore ), who set up his own shipping line under difficult conditions. The story takes place in Victorian England in the second half of the 19th century and extends over a period of about 26 years.
Some episodes depict the living conditions of the working class and the ruling classes at the time of the plot as being relatively rich in contrasts. In one episode, the death of Karl Marx is mentioned in this context and his books are called anarchist.
Originally the series was supposed to play in the present, but this was rejected by the BBC. Initially, a pilot film was made, which was unexpectedly well received by the TV audience. It was then decided to start producing a series that soon proved to be a great success.
The Onedin line was successfully used in over 40 countries around the world. There are a total of 91 original episodes in 8 seasons, some of which were not dubbed into German. Speakers included Christian Brückner (James Onedin), Norbert Langer (Elmer Frazer) and Almut Eggert (Isabel Onedin / Frazer).
Changes in the German synchronization
In the dubbed version for ARD television , the role names of Jessica Benton and Philip Bond have been changed. While the characters have the first names Elizabeth and Albert in the English original, the first names Isabel and Elmer were used in German.
Theme music
The title music comes from the Spartacus ballet by Aram Chatschaturjan (Adagio von Spartacus and Phrygia), and numerous excerpts from symphonic works by other well-known composers can be heard.
