The Danmark is a sailing training ship for the Danish merchant fleet, built in 1933 .

history

Danmark ship's bell

After the sale of the Viking and the loss of the five-master København in 1928, the Danish government commissioned the construction of a new sailing training ship. It was launched on November 19, 1933 at Nakskov Skibsværft in Nakskov and put into service the following year. Initially it sailed with a regular crew plus 120 officer candidates from the merchant fleet.

At the beginning of the Second World War , the ship was on a trip to the World's Fair in New York . There the commandant received instructions to remain in the United States . The ship remained as a trailer in Jacksonville until the USA entered the war . From 1941 it was used as a training ship for the United States Coast Guard with the approval of the Danish government . In the period from January 1942 to September 1945, around 5,000 candidates for the US Coast Guard were trained in this way.

After the end of the war, the ship returned to its home country on November 13, 1945 and resumed school operations from 1946. After a modernization in 1959, the number of boys to be trained on board was reduced to 80. In April 2003, the operation of the ship was transferred to the Maritime School in Frederikshavn (MARTEC), for which the ship now makes regular trips.
