The machine factory Frichs Maskinfabrik og Kedelsmedie A / S in the Åbyhøj district of the Danish city of Aarhus existed from 1854 to 1979. The company was the only large locomotive factory in Denmark and for decades the main supplier to the Danish State Railways (DSB).

history

Frichs was founded in 1854 by Søren Frich (1827–1902) in Aarhus with 25 employees. In the early days, Frichs manufactured products for agriculture and the construction industry. Equipment for breweries and dairies was added later . The first products for the railroad were switches , turntables and coaling systems .

The first steam engine was made around 1855. Around 1870 the company tried to develop ship steam engines, but failed.

Søren Frichs Efterfølgere

Søren Frich sold his company in 1885, which at that time had around 150 employees. The new owners continued to run the factory under the name Søren Frichs Efterfølger . At the turn of the century Frichs was the most important steam engine manufacturer in Denmark. In order to have more space for plant expansions, the old location was given up and the company moved into a new area in the Aarhus suburb of Åbyhøj. The move was completed in 1912 and the old factory buildings were demolished. Now the company had a siding that had been missing until then.

A / S Frichs Maskinfabrik og Kedelsmedie

In 1912 the company was converted into Aktieselskab (A / S) ( A / S Frichs Maskinfabrik og Kedelsmedie or A / S Frichs).

Today the group of companies mainly builds engines and turbines. The company is based in Horsens .
