Howard Lang (born March 20, 1911 in Marylebone , Greater London , † December 11, 1989 in West Hampstead ) was a British actor ; his most famous role was that of Captain William Baines on the BBC series The Onedin Line .

Early years

Howard Lang was born Donald Yarranton, son of Edward John Yarranton (1884-1954) and Clara Ann (née Malkin) (1888-1921). His father had left the family's bookbinding business to become a traveling salesman for Winsor & Newton , a manufacturer of art supplies.

Lang served in the Royal Navy for seven years , including World War II . In January 1941 he was made a temporary sub-lieutenant and in January 1942 a lieutenant. In this position he served until the end of the World War.

His younger brother from his father's second marriage was Sir Peter Yarranton (1924-2003), Chairman of the United Kingdom Sports Council from 1989 to 1994 and a well-known face in rugby union for more than 40 years, both as a player and as an official.

Acting career

Lang attracted international attention in his role as ship captain Baines in the Onedin Line (1971-1980).

Lang also appeared in other BBC productions, e.g. B. The Six Wives of Henry VIII , Z-Cars , Softly, Softly , The Vise , Doctor Who and An Unearthly Child .

He also played Bart Hudd in the first production of The Room , Harold Pinter's first play .

In an early seafaring role, he made a guest appearance as a driver on board a Roman galley in Ben Hur , which is leading the battle against an enemy fleet.

Howard Lang died in 1989 at the age of 78.
