Duncan Grant
Duncan James Corrowr Grant (born January 21, 1885 in Rothiemurchus, Scotland , † May 8, 1978 in Aldermaston , Berkshire ) was a Scottish painter and a member of the Bloomsbury Group and the New English Art Club . He was one of the first English painters to be influenced by the work of Paul Cézanne and the Fauves . His work can be assigned to post-impressionism .
Life
Grant was born in Rothiemurchus (Scotland), he was the son of Major Bartl Grant (1858-1924), and lived as a child in India for a while and studied art at the Slade School of Fine Art , as well as in Italy and Paris. His work was mainly influenced by the painter (and Bloomsbury member) Roger Fry , with whom he also worked, so he was co-director of the artist workshop Omega Workshops, which Fry founded in 1913 . In addition to his landscape painting and portraiture , Grant also dealt with ceramic and textile design and worked as a set designer . In the 1920s he became a member of the New English Art Club, along with Stanley Spencer , Paul Nash and Mark Gertler .
He was a cousin of Lytton and James Strachey through whom he met the members of the Bloomsbury Group . Known for his amiable nature, he was a good friend of Rupert Brooke and George Mallory and the lover of both John Maynard Keynes and David Garnett .
Despite his homosexuality , shortly before the start of the First World War , he moved in with the painter Vanessa Bell , Virginia Woolf's sister . In 1916 they rented a house called Charleston near Firle , Sussex , which they decorated and where they also had their studios. Although it is believed that his sexual relationship with Vanessa had already ended before their daughter Angelica (born December 25, 1918) was born, they lived together until Vanessa's death in 1961. This relationship did not prevent Grant from continuing his relationships with men.
In 1978 Grant died in the house of the poet Paul Roche (1916–2007), whom he had known since 1946 and who had cared for him with great devotion.
