Duncan Grant (oarsman)

Duncan Grant (* 7. February 1980 in Ashburton ) is a former New Zealand lightweight - rowers . He was world champion in the lightweight one from 2007 to 2009.

Athletic career

Duncan Grant started rowing in 1993. In 2002 he won the silver medal in the lightweight single at the U23 World Championships . At the 2003 World Championships in Milan, he started with Nathan Terrey in the lightweight double scull and finished in 15th place.

At the 2006 World Championships in Eton, Duncan Grant won his first adult medal. Behind the Briton Zac Purchase and the Spaniard Juan Zunzunegui Guimerans he won the bronze medal in the lightweight single. While in 2006 he was about five seconds behind the winner at the finish, he won the 2007 World Championships in Munich with three and a half seconds ahead of Italian Lorenzo Bertini . In the following year he was only 0.35 seconds ahead of the Dutchman Jaap Schouten at the 2008 World Championships in Linz / Ottensheim . In 2009 in Poznan he won his third title in a row with one and a half seconds ahead of the Greek Vasileios Polymeros . In 2010 the World Championships took place in front of a home crowd on Lake Karapiro. Grant missed the A-final and finished seventh as the winner of the B-final. The following year he reached the A-final again at the 2011 World Championships in Bled and received the bronze medal behind the Dane Henrik Stephansen and the Italian Pietro Ruta .

In 2012 Grant tried to qualify for the Olympic Games with the lightweight four-man without a helmsman . At the decisive regatta in Lucerne, the New Zealanders took third place, only the first two boats qualified for the Olympic regatta . At the 2013 World Championships , 1.87 m tall Duncan Grant competed again in the lightweight single, but only achieved 13th place.
