Athletic career

Bjarne Eltang, who is 1.82 m tall, took eleventh place at the 1979 World Championships in the adult class with the Danish four-man without a helmsman . Two years later he won the bronze medal in the lightweight double scull at the 1981 World Championships in Munich together with Leif Kruse . In 1982 Eltang took the Danish eighth in the forerunner competition of the U23 World Championships and won the title. At the 1983 World Championships in Duisburg , he first competed in the lightweight single and won the title in front of the British John Melvin , and the following year he defended the title at the World Championships in Montreal in front of Paul Fuchs from the United States.

In 1985 he rowed again with Leif Kruse in the lightweight double scull and finished fourth at the World Championships in Hazewinkel . In 1986 in Nottingham he competed in the lightweight single and won silver behind the Australian Peter Antonie . At the 1987 World Championships in Copenhagen, he finished fourth in the lightweight single two seconds after the third-placed Italian Ruggero Verroca .

In 1988 Eltang switched to the (heavyweight) double scull and took part in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul with Per Rasmussen . The two won their lead in front of the boat from the GDR, in the semi-finals they came third behind the boats from the Soviet Union and the Federal Republic of Germany. In the final, the Danes took sixth place, almost six seconds behind the Dutch Olympic champions.
