Raimund Haberl
Raimund Haberl (born August 29, 1949 in Blumenthal , Zistersdorf ) is an Austrian water manager and former rower . In the lightweight - One he was twice (unofficial) world champion.
Athletic career
In lightweight rowing, FISA championships were held from 1974 to 1984 ; it was not until 1985 that these championships were officially known as the World Rowing Championships. At the second edition of the FISA championships in 1975 Haberl took second place behind the Swiss Reto Wyss and ahead of the US defending champion William Belden . In 1976 the FISA championships were held on the Ossiacher See near Villach and Haberl was able to win the title in one in front of a home crowd in front of the Dane Morten Espersen and the French Roland Weill .
After a sixth place in 1977 and a fourth place in 1978 won Haberl his next medal at the FISA championships in 1979 when he bronze behind William Belden and the Canadians Brian Thorne received. In 1981 Haberl won another bronze medal, this time behind the Americans Scott Roop and Brian Thorne. Haberl won his second title in 1982 on the Rotsee near Lucerne, ahead of Scott Roop. In 1983 Haberl took sixth place.
Since lightweight rowing was not Olympic in the 1970s and 1980s, a lightweight rower only had a chance of participating in the Olympics if he competed with the heavier rowers. Raimund Haberl, who is only 1.75 m tall, competed in the unlimited single at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and finished second in the B final in eighth place overall.
At the 1985 Rowing World Championships in Hazewinkel, Belgium, the first official lightweight world championship, Haberl won silver again behind the Italian Ruggero Verroca . In 1991 Haberl reached his last World Cup final, he finished sixth with the Austrian lightweight eighth.
