The Theodoros Vardinogiannis Stadium ( Greek Γήπεδο Θεόδωρος Βαρδινογιάννης ) is a football stadium in Heraklion , on the Greek island of Crete . Mainly the home games of the current first division club OFI Crete take place in the stadium. The venue is located in the middle of residential buildings and is nicknamed Yedikule ( Turkish for seven towers ). Only a few hundred meters to the west is the Pankritio Stadio, which opened in 2004 and has 26,202 seats.

history

The stadium was completed in 1951 and is named after Theodoros Vardinogiannis , the founder of OFI Crete. The facility was opened on November 11, 1951 with the game of OFI Crete against ASDAN ( Greek Α.Σ.Δ.Α.Ν. , similar to today's national team ). The Cretan team lost the game 4-1.
