OFI Crete , usually just OFI ( Greek ΟΦΗ - Όμιλος Φιλάθλων Ηρακλείου , Omilos Filathlon Irakleiou , Association of Sports Friends of Heraklion ), is a Greek football club from Heraklion , Crete's capital .
history
The association was founded in 1925, its colors are black and white. OFI plays its home games in the Theodoros Vardinogiannis Stadium and, together with Ergotelis, is the largest football club on the island .
OFI rose in 1968 for the first time in the Greek first division, the Alpha Ethniki and belonged to this until 1971, when they were relegated bottom of the table. In 1976 they rose again as the first in the table. In 2009, after 33 years of uninterrupted excellence, the club had to return to the second division, the Beta Ethniki , when they were fourth in the table . Although the third place was reached there, OFI could not prevail in the playoffs and missed the direct return. The following year OFI managed to qualify as third in the table through the playoffs again for the first division. OFI was initially denied promotion due to the 2011 betting scandal in Greece, but the club was able to successfully appeal and then win the playoffs.
In 2018 OFI was promoted to the Greek Super League as champions of the Football League . During the winter break, coach Nikos Papadopoulos had to leave his post and former player Jamie Vera took over the post. With him OFI made 13th place in the table and qualified for the relegation, where they met the runner-up of the Football League AO Platanias . In the first leg at Platanias OFI did not get past a 0-0. Only in the second leg in the home stadium did the team keep up. OFI defeated Platanias 3-2, where Adil Nabi scored the acclaimed goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
